24. OM PURUSHOTTAMAYA NAMA:
Superior to all Chetanas - Baddha, Muktha and Nithya.
We are listening to the lecture today [21st March 2008] from Devar malai, in Karur. Here the Lord is Sri Narasimha, described as Adyatbhutam [ most enchanting] in Srimad Bhagavatham. But the temple requires extensive renovation and repairs. Purushottama means He is superior to Baddha, Muktha and Nithya jeevatma. It can also be said as purusheshu utthama, or Supreme among males or superior to males. Actually, He is the only One, Who is Purusha. All others are sthree or females. Baddhas are jeevatma like us who are in this samsaram, bound by our karma and experiencing papa/ punya. By bhakti yoga or by saranagathi, some ascend to Vaikuntam and then those atman are called Muktha or the released. Permanent residents in Vaikuntam and who are serving the Lord intimately, like Anantha [Adisesha], Garuda, Vishvaksena, etc., are called Nithya. Thus the jeevatma are in trillions and trillions. It includes all living beings like humans, plants, insects, etc. Purushottama means superior to all these.
We have seen Seven names in the 3rd sloka:
yogoyogavidham netha pradhana purusheswara
naarasimha vapu sriman kesava purushottama [3]
