SVS 201 [Hiranyanabha - 196, Suthapa - 197,Padmanabha -198, Prajapati: - 199] (21.6, 21.7, 21.8, 21.9)

196. OM HIRANYANABHAYA NAMA: हिरण्यनाभाय नम:
Possesses Divine navel, desirable like gold.

197. OM SUTHAPASE NAMA: सुतपसये नम:
Embodiment of Divine knowledge.

198. OM PADMANABHAYA NAMA: पद्मनाभाय नम:
Having Lotus in His Divine Navel.

199. OM PRAJAPATAYE NAMA: प्रजापतये नम:
Leader of lord Brahma and other such creations.

Divine names like Hamsa, Suparna, Bhujagottama, etc., showed us the Lord's Gyana Avatar. In Hamsa Avatar, the Lord preached Vedas. In that Avatar He had beautiful wings. The same Lord, Who appeared as Hamsa, is reclining on Adisesha and blessing the devotees. When worshiping the Lord in reclining pose, we should do, not by standing near His head as done by Duryodana, but by standing near His feet as done by Arjuna. We had seen earlier the Divine names Padmanabha [SVS 54] and Prajapati [SVS 76]. Such repetitions are interpreted according the relevant context. Here, the Lord's Divine names are in connection with the Lord reclining on Adisesha. Suthapa indicates the immense knowledge the Lord possesses, to teach others. Even those who thought that they knew everything, the Lord made them to realize the vast knowledge they did not know. Prajapati means creator of praja [people] or creator of Prajapati, lord Brahma. By these Divine names the Lord's Power of Creations is indicated. We are to start 200th Divine name from Sri Ahobila Kshetram in the ensuing days.

SVS 200 [Bhujagottama -195] (21.5)

195. OM BHUJAGOTTAMAYA NAMA: भुजगोत्तमाया नम:
[Due to absence of cable TV transmission today (27th November 2008) we could not listen to the lecture।]

SVS 199 [Suparno - 194] (21.4)

194. OM SUPARNAYA NAMA: सुपर्णाय नम:
With beautiful wings in the Hamsa Avatar.

Sanat Kumara and others are the children of lord Brahma created by his thoughts and so are called manasa putra. Two types of practices are stipulated in Vedas -pravryti dharma and nivruti dharma. Pravrutti dharma is practiced to get pleasures in this world like begetting children or acquiring wealth, etc., and pleasures in Heaven. Nivrutti dharma is to be practiced for discarding all these transient pleasures and seeking the eternal bliss of serving the Lord in Vaikuntam. Are we not to practice pravrutti dharma? Are they also not part of Vedas? Yes, but we have to follow pravrutti dharma with detachment and dedicating the results to the Lord. Pravrutti dharma was preached by Prajapati aka lord Brahma; nivrutti dharma was preached by the Lord Himself. Sanatkumara and others asked lord Brahma to preach them the way to reach Vaikuntam as they were disinterested in others. Lord Brahma did not know the answer. In Srimad Bhagavatam in the 11th skandam, it is told that when lord Brahma meditated on the Lord, He appeared as a Swan or Hamsa and preached the atyadma gyana or the most superior knowledge. This enabled lord Brahma to answer and preach what he learnt to others. When the Lord apperared as Hamsa, His wings were very beautiful. Suparna also indicates Garuda. Sri Andal says Garuda used his wings to provide shade for Sri Krishna as He was grazing cattle in Brindavanam.

SVS 198 [Hamsa: - 193] (21.3)-

193. OM HAMSAYA NAMA: हंसाया नम:
The Lord graced in Hamsa Avatar.

Hamsa, Swan, has an unique quality of drinking only milk and discarding water. We also should try to distinguish and accept essence alone. Even in Vedas we have to study Vedanta, the essence. Swami Desika has authored an epic Hamsa sandesam, in which Sri Rama sends a hamsa to sri Sita as messenger. The hamsa flies over many cities and Kshetrams and Swami Desika describes each of them. Acharyas are called Paramahamsa, as they teach essence. Hamsa is famous for its elegant walk and women are compared to them. Males' walk is compared to elephant or Lion, for the majesty. Sri Rama and Sri Sita compare each other to the walk of elephant and swan. The Lord took the Avatar of Hamsa to preach Vedas.

SVS 197 [Dhamano - 192] (21.2)

192. OM DAMANAYA NAMA: दमनाय नम:
Suppresses heat [sufferings] of samsaram, by His Divine splendour.

Mareechi suggested that His brilliant image is worshiped by others. Now, today's [24th November 2008] Divine name 'damana' suggests that His brilliance suppresses enemies. Weapons He carries, are mere decorations. His brilliance or splendour suppresses His enemies. Dama means control. The Lord controls His enemies by His strength and splendour. In Mahabharata, when He was asked who He was, as He went as emissary, the Lord replied that He was the Ambassador of Pandavas [பாண்டவ தூதன்]. As He entered Hastinapur, first He stayed in Vidura's house. Thinking that Sri Krishna had insulted him, Duryodana was enraged and wanted to humiliate Him. So next day in the Royal Assembly, before Sri Krishna arrived for talks, Duryodana gave very strict instructions to all. That, none should get up in respect, when Sri Krishna arrived. Sri Krishna entered the Assembly with Vidura and Satyaki. Immediately all without any exception raised from their seats. Duryodana was enraged and quetioned why all got up against his instructions. His aides told that all got up because King Duryodana himself had got up from his seat and it was practice that when King stands all in the Assembly should also stand. Then he realized that without his conscience, Duryodana had got up seeing the brilliance of Sri Krishna. Sri Andal says of the Lord as koodarai vellum seer Govinda [கூடாரை வெல்லும் சீர் கோவிந்தா]. In Eedu [ஈடு], Swami Nampillai says that Hiranyakasipu, like gold offered in the bright flames of yagna, dissolved in the splendour of Sri Narasimha. He puns on the word hiranya, which means gold. The Lord got the Divine name Damana, because He destroyed a demon Damana.

SVS 196 [Mareechir - 191] (21.1)

191. OM MAREECHAYE NAMA: मरीचये नम:
Displays His pure radiant image.

Mareechi means with bright image and induces light of Gyana in us. He appears to His devotees in a magnificent way. Sage Vyasa, in spite of authoring 18 Puranas and epic Mahabharata, was not satisfied and was sitting in a pensive mood on the banks of Saraswati river. He was met by Narada, and Vyasa requested Narada to suggest way to remove the dissatisfaction in him. Narada preached Chatusloki Bhagavatam, in Four verses. At that time Narada revealed his earlier births. He was in earlier birth, the son of a widow. His mother served some Bhagavatas and Narada used to ear the residual food, served to Bhagavatas and so his mind was refined. After his mother's death, he wandered without any aim but always thinking of the Lord. Once he sat in meditation and was immersed in the thought of God. After a long time, the Lord appeared to Him radiating His beauty. It was only for a short time and when Narada cried to see that image again, an oracle was heard appreciating his service to his mother, eating Bhagavata sesham and deep meditation, and ordered to continue further to view the Lord's image for ever.

SVS 195 [Govidhampati: - 190] (20.8)

190. OM GOVIDAM PATAYE NAMA: गोविदाम पतये नम:
Always praised by Vedas.

In Vaikuntam, referred to as Nitya vibhooti, the Lord is praised and worshiped by Nityasuris and Muktas always, continuously. There, nothing other than the sound of Vedas is heard. All are blessed with good memory and speech to chant Vedas. Nammalwar says that the Lord blessed Him with knowledge and speech to worship Him [மயர்வற மதிநலம் அருளினன்]. Govidam means possessor of good vocabulary. All such Alwars and Acharyas used their knowledge in noble ways. Should we also not use our knowledge properly? Only, then we also can join the group in Vaikuntam to chant. Thirumazhisai Alwar says that in case the Lord desired to grant him any boon, then He should make the Alwar to chant His names ceaselessly! Every syllable of Vedas, is His name only. Even if one is not conversant with Vedas or Divya Prabhandam, by honouring Vedic scholars, one can gain equal benefits. Govidam pataye - always praised by great scholars. In Madva Bhashyam, govidam is considered to mean Saraswati and Her Consort lord Brahma and their pati [leader], the Lord.

SVS 194 [Govindo -189] (20.7)

189. OM GOVINDAYA NAMA: ॐ गोविन्दाय नम:
Accepts the offerings of Devas.

Sri Andal mentions Govinda Three times in Thiruppavai [koodarai vellum, karavaigal pin senru and chitram sirukale]. We should teach our sampradhyam to our children. Govinda means grants best results, offers best guarantees or empowers us with best knowledge to praise Him. Sri Krishna asked the Gopis to perform pooja to Govardana, instead of to Indra. Indra was furious and showered heavily, and the Lord protected all by lifting Govardana as an umbrella. Repenting for his mistake and pursuaded by Kamadenu, Indra wanted to rectify his mistake by offering pooja in the form of milk abhishekam [bath]! Since the Lord rescued all including Indra, He was called Sri Govinda. When Bhishma was on the bed of arrows, Sri Krishna, bringing Yudishtra along, asked Bhishma whether all his organs were functioning properly. It implied that the Lord has to give the power of every organ; and, so He is Govinda.

SVS 193 [Suranando -188] (20.6)

188. OM SURANANDAYA NAMA: सुरानन्दाय नम:
Makes Devas cheerful.

Because of Indra's indifference, Sri Maha Lakshmi disappeared into the ocean. But instead of being angry with Indra, the Lord helped in many ways to churn ocean and got Amrut for them. Sura does not mean merely Devas like Indrs, Vayu, Agni, Varuna, etc., but it also means Nityasuris, who are experiencing everlasting bliss in Vaikuntam, by serving the Lord. Aptly, today's [18th November 2008] Divine name is from the sannidhi of Sri Vaikuntanatha, in Parameswara Vinnagaram.

SVS 192 [Aniruddha: -187] (20.5)

187. OM ANIRUDDHAYA NAMA: अनिरुद्धाय नम:
His actions are without any obstacles.

Today's [17th November 2008] Divine name aniruddha is explained from Parameswara Vinnagaram temple in Kanchipuram. The Lord graces from Three tiers. The Lord is Sri Vaikunta Nathan. This is the same as Divine name Aprameya [SVS 52]. It could be interpreted to indicate One of the Vyuhamurti or His actions are never obstructed. When Bhanasura imprisoned Sri Krishna's grandson, Aniruddha, the Lord invaded and rescued and none could stop Him. Once, wife of Indra, Indrani, refused to give Parijata flower to Satyabhama, Who desired to have one flower. Indrani humiliated Her saying that those flowers were not meant for mere Human mortals! On knowing this Sri Krishna flew into Indra loka, mounted on Garuda and brought the Parijata tree itself and planted it in Satyabhama's back yard! None could stop Him. His will power -sankalpam- will always rule and none can ever change it.

SVS 191 [Satamgati: -186] (20.4)

186. OM SATHAM GATHAYE NAMA: सतां गतये नम: That Lord with Sri Lakshmi, is refuge for sadhus.

We should revive old customs instead of starting a new one. His mercy redeems good persons. All sages of Dandakaranya forest said that Sri Rama was their refuge and they would not seek asylum from anyone else. Alwar says just like a child seeks its mother only, even if she was angry with the child, sadhus seek the Lord only as He is always associated with Sri Thayar. Swami Desika says that without mercy, other great qualities of the Lord would be of no use to us, in Dayasathakam. When Dasaratha performed Aswameda yagna, Devas assembled and at that time they discussed their plight of suffering meted out by Ravana and complained to lord Brahma, who said that they had to seek the refuge of Sriman Narayana, Who alone could bring happiness. Instantly, the Lord appeared with His Consorts and mounted on Garuda, and assured protection.

SVS 190 [Srinivasa -185] (20.3)

185. OM SRINIVASAYA NAMA: श्रीनिवासाय नम:
Sri Alarmelmangai in His chest [ஸ்ரீ அலர்மேல் மங்கை உறை மார்பன்] or Consort of Sri Lakshmi.

In Sri Villiputhur program, it is proposed to convey our sampradhayam in simple way. This would help youngsters. Program is scheduled to be held on 22nd and 23rd November. Srinivasa indicates He is the abode of Sri. Near Srirangam is Jeeyarpuram and the Lord arriving there is as important as Kanchi Garudotsavam or Sri Azhagar arriving at Vaigai river. In the commentaries our ancestors have remarked about Sri Namperumal's visit to Jeeyarpuram. What was the state of Ayodhya after Sri Rama left for forests? It was like Srirangam after Sri Namperumal leaving for Jeeyarpuram! During that visit the Lord used to visit Silayatti village where the Lord is Sri Vasudeva. This custom is not there for some reasons; but all devotees should try to revive the same. The Lord never parts Sri Lakshmi. Swami Ramanuja before starting his commentary on Brahmasootra, composed a prayer sloka invoking Lord's blessings and making the commentary auspicious. In that sloka [akila bhuvana...], he invoked the blessings of Sri Srinivasa. He says that the Lord has decided to bless all those surrendered and their kith and kin. When Vibheeshna சுர்றேண்டேறேது, the Lord promised to him as well as his family and those accompanied him, though they did not make a formal surrender. Sri Srinivasa is the pinnacle of Vedas.

SVS 189 [Mahibhartha -184] (20.2)

184. OM MAHIBHARTRE NAMA: महीभर्त्रे नम:
Always supporting the Univese, as Sri Adi Koorma.

This month 22nd and 23rd a programme called 'Sri Villiputhur' is to be conducted in Astika Samajam, Venus Colony, Chennai. It would be a rare opportunity for devotees to participate and receive Sri Andal's blessings.
Mahi bhartha means supporting Universe. Bhartha means husband. Mahi means world and so husband of World. It is the Lord. This we understand from Sri Varaha Avatar. Sri Andal is considered as the incarnation of Sri Bhudevi. Sri Bhudevi wanted to teach the world all She learnt from Her Husband. Those are the verses from Sri Andal.

SVS 188 [Maheshvaso - 183] (20.1)

183. OM MAHESHVASAYA NAMA: महेष्वासाय नम:
In Avatars He aimed arrows wonderfully.

The Lord has sharp arrows. We are in Daamal, near Kanchipuram. Sri Thayar is called Sri Thirumal Azhagi [ஸ்ரீ திருமால் அழகி], in beautiful Tamil. Ishu means arrow in Sanskrit. The sharpness of His arrows, was exhibited when He killed 14,000 rakshasas in Janastana. He is called Sri Vijaya Raghava. Sugriva wanted to test the Lord's prowess! The Lord showed His strength by flipping off by His toe, the heavy skeleton of Dundubi demon, several miles away. Yet, Sugriva wanted to test once more! As requested by Sugriva, Sri Rama directed an arrow to pierce through Seven large trees, not in a single alignment, and after that the arrow pierced the earth to reach Patal lok and then finally, returned back to Sri Rama! Swami Desika says in his Yadavabhyudayam, that some of the Yadavas during Sri Krishna Avatar, went on a pilgrimage and happened to see Patal lok through this opening! Afterwards, when Sugriva was coronated, but forgot his promise to help to find Sri Sita, Sri Rama sent a message to Sugriva that the sharpness of His arrows were in tact and had not been blunted! Sri Rama's arrows are famous. Sri Krishna fought Banasura, who had the blessings of lord Shiva and who had 1000 arms. The shower of arrows from Sri Krishna simply drove away the armies of Banasura. Swami Desika says that Banasura's army ran away, like evil persons running away from good things preached by noble persons! Poet Kamba says that when the arrow of Sri Rama pierced demon Thataka and came out, it was like bad students hearing the teacher's advises in one ear and passing it out of the other ear!

SVS 187 [Mahadridrut - 182] (19.8)

182. OM MAHADRIDHRUTE NAMA: महाद्रीधृते नम:
During churning of the Ocean, supported Mountain Mandara.

The Lord is capable of supporting anything. Today's [10th November 2008] Divine name is from Dhamal [தாமல்], near Thrupputkuzhi [திருப் புட்குழி], on the Madras - Bangalore highway. The Lord of this place is Sri Damodara [ஸ்ரீ தாமோதரன்]. Due to Durvasa's curse Sri MahaLakshmi disappered. The Lord advised Devas to churn the ocean. Mountain Mandara and great snake Vasuki were used to churn the ocean by Devas and Asuras. But their combined power was insufficient and so the Lord using His Thousands of hands churned from both sides. But the mountain due to its weight started sinking and the Lord appeared as the great Tortoise, Sri Koorma, and supported the mountain at the bottom. Plus the Lord also held the mountain from swinging by holding its peak! All this the Lord did to acquire His Consort! During churning the mountain's movement on Its back was like scratching for the Lord Sri Koorma! So, Swami Desika says that the Lord slept and the sound of the snore roared all over!! Adri means mountain and so this Divine name suggests the Lord supporting mountain. The Lord also supported Govardhana giri, for Seven days!

SVS 186 [Ameyatma -181] (19.7)

181. OM AMEYATMANE NAMA: अमेयात्मने नम:
Possessing immeasurable qualities.

Today's [7th November 2008] is from Satyakalam, near Mysore [please visit http://www.karnatakavaishnavatemples.net/Mysore/Sathyagalam.htm ]. This is the place where Swami Desika lived for 10 years, when Srirangam was attacked and looted. His sannidhi is here.

He composed Abheedistavam, chanting which our fears are driven out. On 8th November 2008, Saturday Theerthavari festival is being celebrated in Kaveri there. Ameyatma means limitless or infinite. It is same as in the Divine name Aprameya [SVS 52] seen earlier. Meya in Sanskrit means limit. In Srimad Ramayana, people tell Dasaratha that Sri Rama's qualities are numerous.

SVS 185 [Sriman -180] (19.6)

180. OM SRIMATHE NAMA: श्रीमते नम:
Possessed ornaments appropriate to that Divine body.

Divya Prabhandam of Alwars is considered as equal to Vedas. Poigai, Bhutam and Pei Alwars are the First Alwars and started the Divya Prabhandam. Their birth stars are Thiruvonam, Avittam and Sadayam, appearing consecutively. Poigai Alwar was born in the pond near Sri Yatoktakari ., in Kanchipuram. Bhutatalwar was born in the temple of Sri Sthalasayana Perumal, in Mahabalipuram. Pei Alwar was born in a well in Mylapore, in Chennai. They never experienced garbhavasam or they did not take birth in any womb. Sriman means decorated with many ornaments. Ear rings, necklaces, waist belt, etc., are some of His ornaments. In Srimad Ramayana, when Sri Rama and Lakshmana arrive at Risyamuka parvatam, in search of Sri Sita, Sugriva, hiding there in fear of his brother Vali, deputes Hanuman, to find out Who They were. The moment Hanuman sees Sri Rama, he understands that He was the Almighty God and praises. One of the epithets he used is sarva bhushana bhusha: - meaning the Divine body that should be decorated with ornaments. He further asks, with such a body why Sri Rama had come like an ascetic? This is the normal interpretation we might understand; but our great commentators interpret this to mean that Hanuman was asking why the Lord should mesmerize them - mere monkeys- by displaying His beautiful body! He could have concealed the body beauty by ornaments!! In Sri Vishnu purana, it is said that weapons are ornaments for the Lord. He displays weapons to infuse faith in devotees like us, that He is the Ultimate Protector. Swami Nampillai in his Eedu [ஈடு] commentary on Divya prabhandam says that Sugriva handed over some ornaments thrown by Sri Sita, while She was abducted by Ravana. Sri Rama looked at the ornaments and mentioned each ornament. Swami Nampillai says that the Lord mentioned to remind that those were the most fortunate ornaments to have been in touch with Her Divine body!

SVS 184 [Anirdeshyavapu: - 179] ( 19.5)

179. OM ANIRDESHYAVAPAVE NAMA: ॐ अनिर्देश्य वपवे नम:
Possesses incomparable Divine Auspicious Image [திவ்ய மங்கள விக்கிரகம்].

Swami Desika is considered as the incarnation of the Bell [घंठावतारा திருமணி அவதாரம்] in Sri Venkatachalapathi sannidhi in Thirumala. He was born in Purattasi Thiruvonam [today, 5th November 2008, is also Thiruvonam day!]. Because of Brahmotsavam in Purattasi in Thirumala, Swami Desika's birth day is celebrated on Aippasi Thiruvonam at his sannidhi near Sri Govindaraja Perumal temple in Thiruppati. Anirdeshyavapu means the Lord possesses an image which has no comparison. When Sri Rama entered Mithila town, He was a feast to the eyes. Poet Kamba says that those who saw His arms saw those only; those who saw His feet, saw them alone. That is the beauty of each part of His body was so captivating that they could not see other parts! [தோள் கண்டார் தோளே கண்டார்!]. Anjaneya is puzzled as to how to describe the beauty of the Lord to Sri Sita. Upanishads say that words and mind return without able to describe Him! Alwars faint while imagining the Lord's image. Those never forgetting His beauty would never be reborn [வடிவழகு மறவாதார் பிரவாதாரே!].

SVS 183 [ Mahadyuti: - 178] (19.4)

178. OM MAHADYUTAYE NAMA: महाद्युतये नम:
Possesses radiance; that is, very bright.

While chanting SVS we pray to ensure no obstacles [ vignam nignanti satatam vishvaksenam tamasraye]. For any Vaidika karma, we chant this and perform Vishvaksena aradanam. Vishvaksena is the commander of the Lord. Though some might say this denotes Ganapati, it points to Vishvaksena. He is accompanied by his consort Sootravati and many assistants like Gajanana. Mahadyuti means bright. In Thiruthanka, in Kanchi, the Lord is Sri Deepaprakasa. Saraswati created darkness and lord Brahma prayed to eliminate darkness and the Lord appeared as Sri Deepaprakasa. The Lord also removes our darkness of ignorance. Finally, Sri Varadaraja appeared in the yagna and He was so bright, that Swami Desika says Sun was like a candle lit in bright sunlight!! In sandyavandanam, we worship the Lord amidst the Sun as with brightness more than million Suns!

SVS 182 [Mahashaktir -177] (19.3)

177. OM MAHASHAKTTYE NAMA: महा शक्तये नम:

I could neither listen nor record the lecture on SVS and so unable to write on today's [3rdNovember 2008] Divine name.
