SVS 161 [Oorjita: - 158] (17.6)

158. OM OORJITAYA NAMA: ऊर्जिताय नम:
Mighty to suppress enemies.

Maha Bali offers his head for the Lord to place His foot to measure Third foot. Because we should honour our words. Sri Krishna tells Draupati, that even if Himalayas become dust or sky falls down, His words to her would never fail. Because of such a promise Dasaratha had to send Sri Rama in exile; Yudhishtra had to suffer living in forests. Namuchi, son of Maha Bali, protested that the Lord had tricked his father. He was thrown away but not killed, as he was also related to Prahalada, to whom the Lord had promised that none of his relations would ever be killed. For the same reason even Banasura was spared by Sri Krishna. In the Bhagavatam, composed by sage Garga, a story is told. When Sri Vamana entered the yagna vatika of Maha Bali, his daughter Ratnamala, was attracted by His beauty and wished she could suckle this tiny tot! But when she thought that the Lord had cheated her father, she voiced her protest and the Lord made her into a demon. This demon was Puthana and her wish for suckling the Lord was fulfilled in Sri Krishnavatara! Thus by the Divine name oorjita He punishes His enemies and , at the same time, obeys the desire of His devotees.

SVS 160 [Suchir - 157] (17.5)

157. OM SUCHAYE NAMA: सुचये नम:
Possesses Purity of not expecting thanks for help done to His devotees.

By the Divine name amogha: we could understand the Lord's intentions. Amogha also means that the relationship would never go waste. Most of our worldly relationships are never permanent nor pleasant. But the relationship with the Lord is permanent and always happy. Suchi: means Pure. Here, purity should not be interpreted as done earlier. But the Lord does not expect any rewards or thanks for all the help He gave. Indra got back his property. He did not do anything in return. Maha Bali also was rewarded for his Bhakti, by making him the ruler of the nether worlds -Pathala; not merely that, the Lord is ever guarding Pathala, as Sri Vamana, so that Maha Bali did not get any trouble from others. He does not expect anything from His devotees; but we do it for our satisfaction. The maximum He expects is anjali or salute with folded hands! Anjali means, A, which means the Lord, is transformed into ice - another form of jalam or water; and so melts in compassion!

SVS 159 [Pramshu - 155 & Amogha - 156] (17.3 &17.4)

155. OM PRAMSHAVE NAMA: प्राम्शवे नम:

156. OM AMOGHAYA NAMA: अमोघाय नम:
Flawlessly, blessed Maha Bali, like Indra.

Idam vishnur vichakrame tredanidade padam samudamasya bahumsure |

Sri Trivikrama is next stage to Sri Vamana. Near Srirangam Main gopuram, there is a sannidhi for Sri Vamana [திருக் குறளப்பன் சந்நிதி]. Sri Trivikrama can be seen in Kazhi Sri Rama vinnagaram [ also known as Sirkazhi], Thirukkovalur and Thiru Ooragam [ near Kanchi]. Pramshu means growing to gigantic form. Swami Desika describes this growth. Before He grew, the galaxy of stars were on the sky like an umbrella. But as the Lord grew, initially the stars appeared as diamond studded crown for the Lord. A little later, when the Lord grew larger, the stars appeared as necklace for the Lord. After some time, they appeared as the waist belt [ஒட்டியாணம்], for the Lord. Finally, they appeared as the anklet at His feet! After striding Two steps by which all the 14 worlds were measured for acquisition, Maha Bali, out of humility, offered his head as the place for the Third step. The Lord wanted to bless him and not destroy him and so offered him all the nether worlds for him to rule. He blessed both Indra and Maha Bali alike.

SVS 157 [Vamana -154] ( 17.2)

154. OM VAMANAYA NAMA: वामनाय नम:
Took Sri Vamana Avatar to save Indra.

The Lord was born to Aditi, who observed the payovratam, on a shukla Dwadasi, in the star Shravana and in the month of Avani. Thus born Sri Upendra was Dwarf in size and so is Sri Vamana. It is like condensed milk. In Tamil it is thirattu pal [திரட்டுப் பால்]! Entire beauty was condensed in Him. Parents were happy at the birth of the Lord as their child. Every ceremony associated with birth was properly done. He grew to the right age for Upanayanam. After Upanayanam, the Lord reaches the Yagna site of Maha Bali.

SVS 156 [Upendro -153] (17.1)

153. OM UPENDRAYA NAMA: उपेन्द्राय नम:
Took an Avatar as the Younger Brother of Indra.

Swami Parashara Bhatta comments that from now on various Avatars are mentioned in SVS. In Jagadidaja, the name Sri Vishnu was suggested. The Lord takes many Avatars and of them Ten are listed for easy appreciation. In those Ten Avatars, Sri Vamana is the First of fully grown Human form. It is a coincidence that Sri Vamana Avatar is to be explained, after mentioning Sri Nrusimha for the previous Divine name. Like the Lord was born as the son of Dasaratha, He was born as the younger brother of Indra. Kashyap Prajapati had Two wives Aditi and Diti. Aditi's children were Devas and Diti's children were Asuras. Asuras overpowered Devas. Bali, grand son of Prahalada, once grabbed Indra's property. Bali always obeyed his Acharya Shukra, and thus his wealth grew. Seeing the plight of Devas, Aditi requests her husband Kashyap to grant her a child to win over Asuras. Kashyap asked her to follow payo vratham. In this, she has to smear the mud dug by pigs and bathe in river. Then she has to offer rice cooked in cow's milk to the Lord and eat only that. Like this the fasting has to start on an Amavasya and complete on Ekadashi. It may be difficult to follow this fasting at present; but offering good milk to and worshiping Sri Vamana, and praying for a good child will, certainly be blessed. By offering modhakam [கொழுக்கட்டை] to Garuda in the temple of Sri Kalyana Narasimha Perumal, our miseries will evaporate. Aditi did accordingly and in Avani [ஆவணி ] month in Shravana star and on Dwadasi day, Sri Vamana was born. Thus He became Sri Upendra.

SVS 155 [Punarvasu: - 152] (16.10)

152. OM PUNARVASAVE NAMA: पुनर्वसवे नम:
He is Antharyami in those Two.

Today's [22nd September 2008] lecture is again from Ramagiri Sri Kalyana Nrusimha temple. The Lord Sri Narasimha appeared benevolent to devotees, while at the same time appeared frightening to enemies. By worshiping all the Three Sri Narasimha of Devar malai, Ramagiri and Kadavur [all in Karur district] in one stretch on the same day, success and happiness are certain in our lives. Punarvasu is the name for a star constellation. Sri Rama was born in Punarvasu star. Parashara Bhatta says that punarvasu suggests that the Lord is the inner soul or antharyami of lord Brahma and lord Shiva. It is as per Sanskrit grammar. Sri Narasimha Avatar proclaims that the Lord is the antharyami of everything. Only the devoted 'see' Him. Sri Narasimha instantly rewards the devotee [அடித்த கை பிடித்த பெருமாள் !]

SVS 154 [Viswayoni: - 151] (16.9)

151. OM VISWAYONAYE NAMA: विस्वयोनये नम:
He is the Cause of the Effect Universe so formed by those Two.

We are at Ramagiri, near Devarmalai. Here we can worship Sri Kalyana Narasimha. From here we can reach nearby Kadavur, where we can worship Sri Karuna Narasimha. To the lecturer [UVe Sri Ananthapadmanabhachariyar] the Lord Sri Kalyana Narasimha blessed to compose a sloka incorporating all the Nine Divine names in Sri Mantraraja:
Ugraroopaya veeraya vishnave anupatejate Sarvastitaya simhaya sri nrusimhaya mangalam| Bhimaya bhadra roopaya mrutyu kalaya devate Kalyanapura vasaya sri nrusimhaya mangalam||
By worshiping all the three Kshetrams in the same day, starting from Devar malai, followed by Sri Kalyana Narasimha and Sri Karuna Narasimha, all our miseries would certainly vanish. All these three Kshetrams form a Triangle. In Ramagiri, the Lord is gracing with Sri MahaLakshmi and so is in Kalyana pose. Kalyana suggests auspiciousness or mangalam or bhadram. In fact, Bhadram denotes Sri Narasimha. This temple also is being renovated. We have seen that the Lord is the Prime Cause for everything. In Swami Madhvacharya Bhashyam, this Divine name Viswayoni is interpreted to mean Garuda. Of all the festivals in any temple the Lord on Garuda vahanam is very important. Here in Ramagiri, outside the temple are the sannidhi of Garuda and Anjaneya. Lighting lamps on modhakam and decorating with jasmine garland on Fridays, in the sannidhi of Garuda, will ensure the fulfillment of our desires. In Panguni Uthram, the Lord graces Brahmotsavam. We have to note that Garuda vahanam is unique for the Lord alone. Garuda is considered embodiment of Vedas. So, He is the Lord realized in Vedas. Viswayoni is the Lord seated on Garuda.

SVS 153 [Jeta -150] (16.8)

150. OM JETRE NAMA: जेत्रे नम:
Ruling those Two.

We are in Devar Malai. Many have participated in the reconstruction of the temple. Sri Ugra Narasimha is with Sri Maha Lakshmi in His chest. Water here is Brahma theertham as it is associated with the Lord. It is dry now, thanks to the environment contamination, to which we have all contributed. Let us at least pray that the Lord should bless water when the samprokshanam festival takes place after the temple is fully reconstructed. Like vijaya, jeta means victorious. He is responsible for the success of lord Brahma and lord Shiva. In Swami Madhwa commentary, an episode from Srimad Ramayana is illustrated here. Once, as requested by Devas, a competition was arranged between lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. At that time, Lord Vishnu made a hoonkaram [sort of nasal sound to exhibit bravery] and it caused a fracture in lord Shiva's bow. The Devas instantly accepted the superiority of Lord Vishnu. This incident is mentioned in Srimad Ramayana, Bala khand, when Sri Rama met Sri Parashurama. Devas mentioned the name jeta there. Sri Parashurama hands over the bow of Lord Vishnu, to Sri Rama and challenges to shoot arrows from that bow. When Sri Rama successfully does that Sri Parashurama, says that He had realized Who Sri Rama was. He should succeed in driving out our ignorance.

SVS 152 [Vijayo -149] (16.7)

149. OM VIJAYAYA NAMA: विजयाय नम:
Ensures Brahma and Shiva to succeed in their endeavours.

Kshetram Devar mari has transformed to Devar malai. We had visited earlier this place and the Lord is Sri Ugra Narasimha. With contribution of devotees, the renovation works have started. Vijaya means bestowing success and Himself victorious. Swami Alavandar says that Arjuna confused dharma and adharma in the battlefield. The Lord preached Gita and Arjuna became successful - that is Vijaya. Lord Shiva once destroyed Tripura. At that time the Lord was present at the tip of lord Shiva's arrow.

SVS 151 [Anagho- 148 ] (16.6)

148. OM ANAGHAYA NAMA: अनघाय नम:
In the Avatars without trace of papa. That is He is not affected by any papa.

We are in Puliyur today [ 16th September 2008] in Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple. Even per family Rs.50.00 per Kshetram could help a lot. The Lord takes many Avatars. The defects of such births do not affect Him. He is blemishless. While changes in attitude can be observed in us, the Lord remains same. In Srimad Ramayana, in the First sarga, Narada was asked by Valmiki as who is that Human, who exhibits unchanging quality? [साम्प्रधाम गुणवान क:?]. Sage Narada replies, Sri Rama. He is called heya pratyaneeka kalyanaika thanam. Absolutely no bad qualities and full of auspicious qualities. Sri Andal says kuraiyonrum illadha Govinda [குறை ஒன்றும் இல்லாத கோவிந்தா]. In Upanishad it is said that Two birds are in a tree; while one eats the fruits, the other is simply watching. The tree is our body; the bird eating the fruits of the tree is our atman; and the bird watching is the Lord. Avatars are like the roles displayed by an Actor.

SVS 150 [ Jagadija -147] (16.5)

147. OM JAGADADIJAYA NAMA: जगदादिजाय नम:
One of the Trinity in the administration of Jagat [Universe].

Religion is a type of Social service. In some episodes it is planned to show the pitiable position of some of the temples in our country. All are requested to help in redeem these temples. Today [15th September 2008] we are in Vyagrapuri or Puliyur, Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple, on the banks of river Amaravathi, in Karur District. Compound wall, mandapams, etc., are all in wrecked condition. Once this temple must have been flourishing. One is shocked to see the wreckage. Reconstruction is to be taken up. The Lord is even before the formation of the Universe. By knowing Him, we can know all.

Possessing compassion and patience at devotees' crimes.

Today [12th September 2008] is the Avatara Jayanthi of Sri Hayagriva and also Sri Vamana.

We can worship the Lord Sri Lakshmi Hayagriva of Sri Parakala Mutt.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_Of9TMGleSyU/Rlw_3LvbmsI/AAAAAAAABRM/cEPrINW6GWM/Hayagrivar+at+Peetam.jpg

It is said that Sri Saraswati or Sri Sharada Devi, profoundly appreciated the commentary of Swami Ramanuja on the Bramhasutra of Vyasa; and gave the title Sri Bhashyam to the commentary and conferred the title Sri Bhashyakara on Swami Ramanuja. Not contented with those, Sri Sharada Devi also gave her pooja idol of Sri Hayagriva to Swami Ramanuja, and which was later inherited by Swami Desika and by Sri Parakala Mutt. Sahishnu means the Lord shows forbearance at our sins. We hesitate to do good things. But we do evil things readily. In Daya sathakam, Swami Desika personifies His mercy, Sri Daya, as Sri Venkatesa's Queen. He compares that just like Her being a Queen, he is an Emperor of sins [अपराद चक्रवर्थी ]! Using Arjuna as an excuse Lord Sri Krishna delivered Gita for our benefit and finally declared that without any worry [of sins committed], by surrendering unto Him, He would save all. That was due to His forbearance quality. Alwar says that even if Sri Thayar were to recommend contrarily [She would never do it], He would maintain that His devotees would never commit any bad things. Such is His pardoning and patience qualities!

SVS 148 [ Bhoktha -145] (16.3)

145. OM BHOKTRE NAMA: भोक्त्रे नम:
Eagerly accepts the offerings of Devotees.

In Srimad Ramayana, Sabari, a woman born in hunter's family, eagerly awaits the arrival of Sri Rama and keeps ready fruits very carefully collected for Sri Rama to eat. We also should offer whatever we are to eat to the Lord before we consume. The Lord sees our bhava or intention and not on the eatables' quality or quantity. We have to thank Him for providing food for us and eat them as prasad. When we offer the food to Him, Who is in archa form as in temples or in our houses, the Lord is not physically eating but we show the food to Him, which is called nivedanam. That is why He is called bhokta. We should educate our children to practice the habit of offering whatever they eat to the Lord. Once Swami Desika was on tour. On the way, since there was no food with him, he offered mere water to his personal God [சாளக்கிராமம்] and drank the same as dinner for that night. He took rest on the platform [திண்ணை] in one of the houses. It was the house of a grain merchant and he heard the noise of someone handling his grains stock. He found a white horse eating the grains. He thought Swami Desika as the Horse owner and woke up Swami Desika. Realizing that it is the Lord Sri Hayagriva, he requested the merchant to offer milk. The Lord blessed Swami Desika and the merchant. This place is called Pon Vilainda Kalathur [பொன் விளைந்த களத்தூர்] near Chengalpattu.

SVS 147 [ Bhojanam - 144] (16.2)

144. OM BHOJANAYA NAMA: भोजनाय नम:
Devotees enjoy His experience sweetly, like eating.

Lord Sri Hayagriva has the white lustre of milk-quartz [ஸ்படிகம்] and is on a white lotus flower, with Sri Saraswati. Here, Saraswati does not indicate the consort of lord Brahma; but it denotes Sri Maha Lakshmi. Once Vedas were stolen away from lord Brahma, by the two demons Madhu and Kaitapa. This made Brahma extremely sorrowful, as he could not perform his creation duty. The Lord took the Sri Hayagriva form and after destroying the demons, He taught Vedas to lord Brahma. Svetasvopanishad is important. Sveta + asva + upanishad = Upanishad of White Horse [faced Sri Hayagriva]. By worshiping Sri Hayagriva we can destroy our ignorance. It is more important to worship the Lord on September 12th, as it is Shravana [star] Dvadashi. The Lord is like tasty food for His devotees. For Alwar the Lord was the food, water and tasty eatables [உண்ணும் சோறு பருகும் நீர் தின்னும் வெற்றிலை]. We have to consume only food offered to the Lord. Perialwar says he remains like without food [பட்டினி நாள்] on those days he could not see Him or chant His names.

SVS 146 [Bhrajishnu-143] (16.1)

143. OM BHRAJISHNAVE NAMA: भ्राजीष्णवे नम:
Capable of appearing to those who worship Him, mentioned as Para roopa.

The speech of those who meditate on Sri Hayagriva, will be like the torrent flow of Jhanavi or river Ganges. Swami Desika was administered the Hayagriva mantra by Garuda in Thiruvahindrapuram and was able to see Lord Sri Hayagriva. On September 12th, the Avatar day of Lord Sri Hayagriva, special poojas are to be performed in Thoopul, Thiruvahindrapuram, Chettipunyam [near Madras] and in many scholars' houses. He will ensure very good education for the children. The starting slokas in SVS, 'shuklambharadharam...' denote Sri Hayagriva. Earlier Divine name chaturbhuja suggested that the Lord is with Four hands. Here, bhrajishnu means He appears with Four arms to those who meditate on Him. In Srimad Ramayana, after the slain of Ravana, his wife Mandodari arrives at the battlefield to see the dead body of Ravana. Sri Rama had not met her earlier; nor, she had seen Sri Rama earlier. She laments that Ravana, who conquered Indra and others, should not have abducted Sri Sita and should not have fought with Sri Rama. Because, she says that He is the 'paramatma sanathana:' - the Almighty God. The Lord Sri Rama appears to her alone with Four arms. In a pasuram Perialwar says 'appoochi kattunginran' [அப்பூச்சி காட்டுகின்றான்], which means frightening other children with eyeballs rolling. It seems Sri Krishna was doing this, while playing with His freinds. Arayars [அரையர்], are experts in explaining Alwars' pasurams in dances. Once, when Swami Ramanuja was seated when Arayars were dancing to Perialwar's pasurams. For appoochi, they rolled their eyes. When this word again came in the next pasuram, Arayars instead of rolling the eyes, acted as the Lord holding the discus and conch; or, in other words display of Four arms. On seeing this change, Swami Ramanuja quipped, whether Swami Embar tutored the Arayar. Swami Embar was seated behind Swami Ramanuja and he corrected the Arayar to show the Four arms bhava.

Thiruvonam is an important day and falls on 12th September, 2008. Avani Thiruvonam is very important. It is the Avatar day of Sri Hayagriva, Acharya of goddess Saraswati, and Who taught all Vedas and other texts. It is beneficial for children to worship the Lord as Sri Hayagriva, to acquire knowledge. Today's [8th September 2008] Divine name suggests the Lord with Four hands. In the above sloka, one palm of the Lord is in vyakya mudra or in preaching style. In another arm the Lord is holding Vedas. Upper Two arms are holding discus and conch. Swami Desika addresses Sri Hayagriva as Vagisakya Vasudevasya Murthy. The Lord was born to Devaki in the midnight in jail; but was born with Four arms, with all robes and ornaments, and divine weapons. At His mother's request, He changed Himself to the form of a normal child.

As Sri Para Vasudeva in Vyuha murti, He has four canine teeth.

When we visit temples we should appreciate the beauty of the Lord. Sri Sita was put to immeasurable sorrow at Ashoka vana by Ravana. When Anjaneya meets Her, She asks Anjaneya to describe Sri Rama's beauty. Lakshmana says that he preferred to be Sri Rama's servant and not as His brother. Hanuman describes the Lord having four prominent beautiful teeth.

140. OM CHATURVYUHAYA NAMA: चतुर्व्यूहाय नम:
In the above Four Forms, possessing jagrat, swapnam, sushupti and turyam stages.

We are in Dasavatara sannidhi in Srirangam. In mantra mahodhadhi, worshiping Sri Narasimha is elaborately explained. Worshiping Him will give the same pleasure as seeing Thousands of Moon at the same time. Delightfully seated on His left lap, Sri Lakshmi looks at Him with pride. To understand the Four Vyuha murthy, one has to seek a proper Acharya and get detailed explanation. Very superficially we can understand these Divine names. Jagrath is the awakening state [opposed to sleeping]. Next is the intermediate stage between sleep and awake. Because in swapna or dreams, our mind is still awake. Sushupti is sleep, when even mind is at rest. Turyam is unconsciousness or fainted state. How they are related to the Vyuhamurthi is very complicated and has to be learnt in detail from an Acharya.

SVS 142 [ -138] (15.4 contd)

138. OM KRUTHAKRUTAHYA NAMA: [continued].

The Lord represents Pravrutti Dharma, yielding temporary rewards and Nivrutti Dharma yielding everlasting Moksham. Today [2nd September 2008] [ ஆவணி ஹஸ்தம்] is an important day. We are continuing the last Divine name today also in Dasavathara sannidhi in Srirangam. It is on the North of Srirangam temple and on the banks of Vadathirukkaveri aka Kollidam [வட திருக் காவேரி (அ ) கொள்ளிடம்]. It is under the administration of Sri Ahobila Mutt. SVS 141 [Kruthakrutha -138] (15.4)

138. OM KRUTHAKRUTHAYA NAMA: कृताकृता नम:
He is in the rewards yielding Pravrutti Dharma and in Moksham yielding Nivrutti Dharma.

Dharma is classified as Two. Pravrutti Dharma and Nivrutti Dharma. In Pravrutti Dharma, one does yagna and other pooja with some reward as objective. Dasaratha performed Puthrakameshti yaga to beget children. Some Kings perform 100 Aswamedha yaga to get the post of Indra. While in Nivrutti Dharma, one might perform the same ceremonies mentioned above and others but without seeking any reward [like Sri Mukkur Swami's Maha Narasimha Swati Maha yagna]. This is explained in Gita as Satvika tyagam. We do all Vedic rites for His pleasure only.
