Enables skipping dangerous spots.

Bairagi Mutt is over 400 years old and is in Sowcarpet in Chennai. There are many sannidhis like for Sri Rama, Sri Varadaraja, Sri Ranganatha, Sri Puri Jagannatha, etc. Tiruadipooram is being celebrated enthusiastically. All the Five Acharyas have sannidhis here. Sri Andal is praised as 'perumboothur mamunikku pinnanaal vazhiye [பெரும்பூதூர் மாமுனிக்கு பின்னானாள் வாழியே]' - meaning 'long live She, Who became younger to Swami Ramanuja'. Though, Sri Andal appeared Thousands of years before Swami Ramanuja, because like an elder brother he fulfilled the wish of Sri Andal. Tarana means helps in crossing samsaram. The Lord takes us to Vaikuntam. In SVS 309 [Divine name 289 Jagatassetu:], it was told that the Lord acts as a Grand bridge for us to cross this samsara sagaram! We can not approach the Lord directly but through an Acharya or Purushakara. That is the simple and correct way! Swami Ramanuja considered Tiruppavai as his breath!

Removes sufferings.

Today's [20th July 2009] lecture is from Bairagi Mutt, in Chennai near Madras Central Railway station. We had seen this temple earlier [SVS 263 to SVS 266]. Here Sri Andal's festival is being celebrated. Ashoka vanam destroyed the sorrows of Sri Sita and Sri Rama. It is said that after Hanuman's visit its name got well established. When Sri Bhudevi asked the Lord as to what is the easy way to get redeemed as He redeemed Her, when abducted by Hiranyaksha. He said that if one chants His Divine name and meditates, when one's health was proper and all faculties of the body were functioning properly, then He is rescued even when in a death bed, one is lying like a log of wood. Sri Bhudevi, to spread this message descended on this earth as Sri Andal! This way we can wipe out all our sufferings! Tiru Adippooram is celebrated on 25th July 2009.

In the last Q&A session, a question was raised regarding dress code to attend temples. Some are still raising doubts. It is difficult to satisfy all. Like other holy books of other religions, Vedas are the main reference for us, as told by Sri Krishna. In this also Vedas or Shastras have to be followed. It is said that Shastras are more considerate than Thousand mothers.

Q: What is Ekadasi and how it has to be followed?

A: Ekadasi is the Eleventh phase of the Moon, after Amavasya [New Moon] or Pournami [Full Moon]. We have to observe upavasa [fasting] on that day. In case full starvation is not possible, we have to avoid full rice that day. That is rice can be broken and cooked. Or, other tiffin items or fruits can be consumed.

Destroys the Cities of Asuras.

Today's lecture is from Panchavati, near Nasik.

Panchavati means Five banyan trees. There is a museum depicting incidents in Ramayana. Purandara means burning down 'puri' or towns. At this place Lord Sri Rama, without any assistance, destroyed 14,000 Rakshasas. Swami Desika says it was like a great elephant effortlessly destroying lotus pond! The Lord destroyed Tripura.

As the Creator of all Universe, happy over creation.

We are in Nasik today also. It is requested that sacred rivers of our country should be kept clean and pure! Here, Kapila river and Godavari join, but presents a very ugly picture, because of disuse and abuse! Here there is Sri Kala [black] Rama temple and nearby Ramakund and Sitakund. This temple is 1000 years old and the idols were recovered from Godavari.

Here Lord Sri Rama is keeping His right hand on His chest. It looks as though the Lord is telling Sri Sita, that He would rather sacrifice Sri Sita and Lakshmana, but would never let down the promise made to sages to protect them! He is Adideva, the Originator for all. He was praised by all characters in Ramayana!

Possesses great luminescence, always.

We are at Nasik. Sri Rama along with Sri Sita and Lakshmana lived here for long time and increased its sanctity. Godavari had a blemish of not informing Sri Rama, Ravana abducting Sri Sita, in spite of Her request and Sri Rama's prayer. This was removed when Godavari had Sri Goda's name! Nasika means nose in Sanskrit. When Soorpanaka, tried to misbehave with Sri Rama and Sri Sita, Lakshmana cut off her nose and ears and so this place is called Nasik. As usual, here also the river is not kept clean, making it unfit for bathing! Here there are Five banyan trees and so it is Panchavati!

Sustains all, playfully.

We are in Nasik, in Maharashtra. River Godavari flows here. Ganga is famous because it originated fro the Divine feet of the Lord. But Godavari has its glory because it has Sri Andal, Goda's, name, says Swami Vedanta Desika!

From now on next 12 Divine names, until Divine name 344, are in petal 17 of Bhagavad Guna Darpanam, by Swami Parashara Bhatta, and explain Vasudeva! Vasudeva means the Lord resides in all, always and supports them without any efforts! This Divine name refers to His Omni Presence. Vasudevan could also mean Son of Vasudeva [वसुदेव]. Those who realize He is Vasudeva, are relieved of the bonds in this world. We should do every activity dedicating to Sri Vasudeva. This is called satvika tyagam. Then both papa and punya would not stick to us! In Bhagavad Gita the Lord tells Arjuna, that it is rare for people to realize He is Sri Vasudeva!

Q: Are there dress restrictions in attending temple?
A: Just like we have dress code for attending offices, workshop or schools, we should follow prescribed dress while entering temples. We seem not to ask question when dress codes are prescribed for offices, dinner, etc. Then, are not we to follow certain ethics in going to temples?

Administers air, the life support for the World.

Today's [9th July 2009] lecture is with description of Vasantotsavam of Sri Namperumal in Srirangam. Just like we go to hill resorts to avoid summer heat, the Lord also needs cool place to refresh! We have to regard the Lord in temples as real Persons and not as mere idols! A well designed garden is there between Chakkarattazhvar sannidhi and Sri Thayar sannidhi. The central mantapam is surrounded by water and artificial springs. With fragrance of flowers and greenery all around, the Lord and the devotees enjoy the ambiance! Vayu vahana means controller of air or breath. It is under His orders that the Nature behaves as we see. Our breath as also the life supporting air for the Universe, are at the command of the Lord. Hanuman served as messenger between Sri Rama and Sri Sita, and saved their lives! So here Hanuman is described as Pranatmaja or Vayu Putra!

Grants power to gods in charge of various activities in managing the World.

We will now enjoy the beauty of the Lord in Srirangam. In Srirangam, almost all through the year, festivals are celebrated. In those, we will describe Poocchatti Utsavam. Beauty of Sri Namperumal and His festivals are beyond words. This festival is unique for Sri Namperumal. He arrives at the open space in front of Sri Kotanda Rama sannidhi. He is adorned with a garment made of flowers only. Though Varada is the name of Lord of Kanchi, the Lord at every temple is Varada. Varada means granting varams [boons]. He grants many. If we pray, we might pray only for limited benefits; but if He grants on His Own, He will grant unlimited boons. One devotee says that he did not want anything, but if the Lord decided to grant, then He should grant Himself! Swami Vedanta Desika in his Yadavabhyudayam, says that when Sri Krishna was born, just as we celebrate our children's birth day, demi gods and village gods granted boons to their devotees, to celebrate the Lord's avatar!

As told in Gita [that the Lord is Skanda among Commanders], He sustains Skanda, Devas' commander.

In Kali Yug, though the followers of Sri Vishnu would dwindle, many great Acharyas would be born on the banks of sacred rivers in South India - says Srimad Bhagavatam. We are touring agraharams in Palaru and surroundings. In Tiruvannamalai District is Injimedu [இஞ்சிமேடு], mutilated name of Yagna medu [யக்ஞமேடு]. From this place the very famous 42nd Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt hailed. Sri Yagna Rama here is very famous, as also Anjaneya.

The Lord provides power for Skanda [or Kandan கந்தன் in Tamil].

Our country's tradition is to look after guests. In Sri Vaishnava sampradhayam, feeding guests is called Tadheeyaaradhanam. Tadheeya [तधीय] means devotees of the Lord. So worshiping His devotees and feeding them is considered as more sacred than worshiping the Lord!

Q: How are we to bathe in sacred waters? What benefits are obtained by bathing in sacred waters?

A: Our land is very sacred, because of presence of many sacred waters, like rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Kaveri, Krishna, etc; Ponds or pushkarinis in temples and Kshetrams, like Ananta saras, Swami Pushkarini, etc. Pilgrimage means visiting Kshetrams and bathing in such sacred waters. We have to know these waters from our elders or Acharyas. One should dip fully and bathe in such sacred waters [Sri Andal says kudaindu neeradi குடைந்து நீராடி]. We have to pray first and then enter the water. We should not bathe in forbidden times [this has to be verified from elders]. Before bathing sankalpam is necessary.

Destroys Asuras and Rakshasas.

Ilankadu is a beautiful village at about 5 Miles from Vandavasi [Wandiwash]. Sri Bhu Nila sametha Sri Vaikuntavasa Perumal graces. The Seventh Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt, hailed from this place. King Raja Raja Chola's statue is here. He eliminates army of Asuras! Devas mean noble ones, who pray only the Lord for their protection. When Asuras grabbed Amrut kalash, the Lord took Sri Mohini Avatar and mesmerized all Asuras with 'Her' captivating appearance. Then 'She' distributed Amrut to Devas alone. With rejuvenated strength Devas could easily defeat Asuras.

Without any external support, sustaining on His own eminence.

We are now in Ilankadu [இளங்காடு], another agraharam in Thondai Mandalam. Earlier we saw Mukkur, where Sri Rama was in the temple and this Sri Rama idol was installed in Ahobilam. We can recall that we worshiped Sri Rama in Lower Ahobilam. In Ilankadu, the Lord is Sri Vaikuntavasa Perumal [ஸ்ரீ வைகுண்ட வாச பெருமாள்]. The Lord once told Narada that He was not in Vaikuntam nor amidst Sun; but in the hearts of devotees, who faithfully followed shastras! The Lord is here for the past 3000 years. There are many stone inscriptions seen here. It is also told that when Tirumazhisai Alwar was a Shaiva devotee, he had come to this place to worship lord Shiva! Pratishta means well supported or established. In Sri Koorma Avatar, He supported Mnadira mountain. Then, who Supported Him? None, other than His own glory! While the Lord supports all, He supports Himself by His sankalpam and eminence.

Always enthusiastic to protect devotees.

Sri Mukkur Azhagiyasingar was born in Avani Hastham, the day when 'Ramanuja Daya patram' taniyan was born! He is the only Azhagiyasingar with the sanyasi name Vedanta Desika, in great reverence to Swami Vedanta Desika!

Due to his great bhakti in Kanchi Sri Varadaraja, he established Sri Varadaraja temple in his village Mukkur. There is a temple for Anjaneya, which is very famous and it is believed that all our prayers are answered by Hanuman here! In Sanskrit, 'pramadam [प्रमादम]' means inattentive or carelessness. This is different from Tamil pramadam [பிரமாதம்], which means excellent! The Lord is without pramadam towards His devotees! He is very attentive and interested in protecting His devotees. Sri Andal says 'ootramudayaai [ஊற்றமுடையாய்]' meaning deeply interested and highly attentive! It is this interest, which made Him to go to forests or as messenger! By chanting Srimate Srivan Satakopa Sri Vedanta Desika Yateendra Maha desikaya nama:, all our problems will vanish and we will be more interested in our duties.

The 44th Jeer of Sri Ahobila mutt was born here. He was a great philanthropist. He was born some 110 years back. He was the head of the Mutt for about 37 years. A satsanga has been formed by like minded persons to celebrate the golden jubilee of Sri Varadaraja Swami temple established in Mukkur by the great Acharya. Adhishtanam means supporter.

We are in Vazhtthur. King Ambarisha was wronged by Durvasa, and the Lord protected Ambarisha with His Sudarsana chakra. When Sudarsana chased Durvasa, he had to fall at the Divine feet of the Lord. At that time the Lord said that though Durvasa did no wrong to the Lord, he tried to tease His Bhakta Ambareesha. The Lord said further that as far as His devotees were concerned, He was never independent and so Durvasa had to fall at Ambareesha's feet and seek pardon. He supported the mountain and saved it from sinking, while churning. Not only that, while it is talked that Devas and Asuras churned, they had no stamina and the Lord pulled from both sides, and churned the ocean! Their minds were in the cheap Amrut, and so they never enjoyed the beauty of the Lord churning!

Q: Can anyone put off a burning lamp?
A: While lamps can be lit by anyone, male or female, young or old, lamps can be put off only by ladies. Also, while, before lighting, we can handle the wick with our fingers, once the wick starts burning, we should never deploy our fingers to control the flame; we should use a small stick or other such implements. We should never do anything under a lamp's shade. To put off lamps, one should not blow or fan. Ladies can put off by cutting off the burning portion or by adding milk or curd.

When ocean was churned, supported it.

Today's [25th June 2009] lecture is also from Vazhutthur. When ocean was churned by rotating Mandira mountain, the Lord supported it from below by taking Sri Koorma Avatar. But when the mountain was rotated, it started tilting; and so, the Lord held it vertically.

323. OM VASAVANUJAYA NAMA: ॐ वासवानुजाय नम:
To bless Indra with Amrut, born after Indra.

Today's [24th June 2009] lecture is from Vazhutthur near Neduntheru. It appears once when the area was flooded, Sri Ambarisha Varada of Aduthurai temple [one of the 108 Divya desams] was brought here to save from flood. That is why the Lord in Vazhutthur is also Sri Ambarisha Varada! Just as Ambarisha is connected with sage Durvasa, Sri Koorma Avatar is also connected with Durvasa. In Munitraya sampradhayam, the very famous Swami Vazhutthur Andavan, hailed from this place. Vasava means Indra and anuja is younger brother. But in this way Swami Parasara Bhatta has not interpreted the meaning; the Lord took avatar for the sake of Indra, after Indra prayed for His help, like lifting the great Mandira mountain, or supporting the mountain from submerging, etc. Swami Vedanta Desika in his Dasavatara stotram says that when the mountain, on top of the shell of the Tortoise, was rotated to churn the ocean, it provided a soothing massage for Sri Koorma and the Lord slept in great comfort!

In Koorma Avatara, Devas were blessed with power to churn the ocean.

From this Divine name 322, until Divine name 332, Sri Koorma Avatara is explained and is the 16th Petal according to Swami Parasara Bhatta. Till the last Divine name Prana: we saw the Lord's Sri Parasu Rama Avatara. Due to the curse of sage Durvasa, Sri Maha Lakshmi disappeared from all the Three worlds and put Devas and Asuras into problems. They were advised to churn the ocean using Mandira mountain. The Lord took Sri Koorma Avatara to support the huge mountain. From that story of Durvasa, we learn how to be courteous to great persona and how to respect Prasadams. Today's [23rd June 2009] lecture is also from Neduntheru. Prasadam means anugraham or blessings. While we should certainly be eager to receive prasadam, we should be disciplined.

Today's [22nd June 2009] lecture is from Neduntheru [நெடுந்தெரு], about 20 KMs from Kumbakonam and is on the banks of Kudamurutti river. The Lord is Sri RajaGopala Swami. Though He is the soul of all, the Lord says Gyanis are His Atma! They always think of Him and can not tolerate separation even for a second!

Adored by Gyanis like Markandeya.

In the Divine name shishteshta, there are two words fused - shishta and ishta. Shishta means great ones or Gyanis, who are famous for anushtanam or faithfully carrying out all duties as per Vedas and as per elders' customs. We have to follow such shishtacharyas path. Thus the Lord is liked by shishtacharyas. Sri Andal says in Tiruppavai, in pasuram 6, 'ullatthukkondu munivargalum yogigalum [உள்ளத்துக் கொண்டு முனிவர்களும் யோகிகளும்]'.

Q&A:
Q: Is there an age requirement for lighting lamps in Perumal sannidhi?
A: Any one irrespective of sex and age can light, provided they have Bhakti.

Q: Can we light a lamp with Two wicks or Two lamps with one wick each?
A: In this question, lamps with single wick only, are not the subject; it is about standing lamps [kutthu vilakku குத்து விளக்கு] with provision for Five wicks. It is certainly better to light these lamps, with Two, or still better, all the Five wicks; but due to conserving oil, if single wick is lighted, it is not objectionable.

Q: At which time is appropriate to chant SVS?
A: SVS can be chanted anytime; but, those wearing poonool, should chant after performing sandhyavandanam, preferably, in the pooja room, after lighting lamp. Ladies should follow the guidelines of their Acharyas.

During pralayam, He, like a mother, impartially, takes care of all in His stomach.

In Sri Ahobila Mutt, KUmbakonam, we worship Sri Lakshmi Narasimha. Kaliyan is given special honours here. Here, during Purattasi - Kettai, birthday of Sri Adivan Satakopa Jeer, festivals are celebrated for Twenty days. In the last SVS sloka [33] there were Eight Divine names. All about the Lord during pralayam. This is continued. According to Swami Parashara Bhatta, ishtovisishta is single Divine name, while Swami Sankara counts as Two Divine names. The Lord does not differentiate between various atman inside Him. All are treated equally.

None could ever understand His eminence.

Anantajit means He has unlimited fame. This recording was done on Vaikasi Tiruvadirai, birthday of the present Srimad Ranga Ramanuja Maha Desikan [popularly known as Sri Mushnam Andavan].

The Lord has Yoga Nidra, which is not regular sleep, but in Yoga. At that time for Thousands of yugs [millions of years], all Universe is stored in His body! Sage Markandeya, went inside His body and was aghast at the site of many, many worlds and could not recall what all he saw inside His body!

Kumbakonam is a city of temples of Sri Vishnu and Shiva. Near Sri Araamudan [Sri Sarngapani] temple and near Potramarai pond, is Kaliyan [Tirumangai Alwar] sannidhi, which is presently Sri Ahobhila mutt. The Lord, when in procession along Potramarai pond, presents special honours to Kaliyan. During Pagal patthu and Irappatthu times in the temple, Kaliyan is brought from Sri Mutt. Similarly, on his birthday, Sri Adi Van Satakopa Swamy [1st Jeer of Ahobhila mutt] arrives at the temple. On another occasion, Sri Amudhan, Sri Chakrapani and Sri Rama, arrive at Mutt and grace devotees.

Sahasrajit means the Lord is beyond time! As mentioned in Bhhotabhavya bhavat prabhu [SVS 11], He is beyond past, present and future. Divine names 301 to 3i3, describe the Lord during pralayam [great deluge] time. During this time none else is existing. All are stored by the Lord in Him. We are subject to births, deaths, growths, etc. But the Lord is ever present. He can not be measured by time.

We are back at Thoppu Theru Sri Rajagopalan temple, in Kumbakonam. Sri Moolavar is Sri Rama with Sri Sita, while Sri Utsavar is Sri Krishna. Also Sri Rama and Sri Sita are sculpted in the same stone! Also Sri Rama is Jatadhari, with moon crescent on His head. Sri Rajagopala is like in Mannargudi. Sage Markandeya was unable to imagine the Lord's form, as mentioned in Divine name adrusya [SVS 325]! At the same time the Lord is so simple to be available even for us in various temples! As told by Nammalwar, He is available easily for devotees, while He is unavailable for others. Mandodari could realize Him, while Ravana could not.

He is taken in procession in Vettiver [வெட்டிவேர்], fibrous material, mantapam, so that He gets cool breeze! He returns, after placing honours on Swami Desika. Also, whatever be the time, whenever He retutns, there would be exchange of garlands with Sri Andal! This way His fame is felt all over, which is prathita! Today is the Ninth day of the Brahmotsavam festival. Navam means nine and new in Sanskrit. We are new targets for His merciful acts! The Lord also sports all new ornaments and garments. It is Tiruvonam day, meant for Theerthavari. The Lord arrives at Gangai Kondan mandapam. He would then start unnoticed by Sri Ubhaya Nacchiyar, stealthlfully! But Sri Ubhaya Nacchiyars close the doors! This is called Mattayadi [மட்டையடி] celebrated in all temples and celebrated in Srirangam on Panguni Uthram day! Later, with Them He arrives at the Hundred pillar mantapam. Then Tirumanjanam is performed with Theerthavari in Ananta saras pushkarini. In the evening the Lord is in procession on Punyakoti vimanam. With this procession to Periya Kanchipuran is concluded. Also Swami Desika arrives from Thoopul.

Sustains the World after destroying wicked people, who are burden to the World.

On the Eighth day, in the morning there is no procession. Yet, it is a very important day as Thotti Tirumanjanam [தொட்டி திருமஞ்சனம்] or Tiru Padam ser Tirumanjanam [திருப் பாதம் சேர் திருமஞ்சனம்], is celebrated. The Lord Sri Varada appears with special hair style for religious bath. Many devotees arrive from various parts to witness this. After a regular Tirumanjanam, the Lord is taken on the hands of Archaka [Kaitthala sevai கைத் தல சேவை] and His divine feet are dipped in sacred water in a large silver vessel [thotti தொட்டி]. In the evening the Lord is on horse procession [Kudirai vahanam குதிரை வாஹனம்] . At that time Tirumangai Alwar's vadinen vadi varundinen pasuram [வாடினேன் வாடி வருந்தினேன்] from Periya Tirumozhi is recited. When the Alwar was arrested by the King for not remitting the revenue collected in his region, the Lord appeared in his dream and showed him, heaps of treasures in the river bed of Vegavati at Kanchi. Alwar collected the money and did many services to the Lord! This incident is commemorated here. Later, near Ekambareswara temple, the Lord graces special procession with crossed umbrellas. Maheedhara means, the Lord supports, not physically as in Sri Koorma or Sri Varaha Avatars, but by removing the burden, of evil elements, from the World. In Sri Parashu Rama avatar, He removed all those who ruled against Vedas and who prevented Yagnas being performed.

Developed anger to destroy Kshatriyas.

Sri Varadaraja graces with the sandal paste used by Sri Thayar, on His chest! On the Fifth day, in the morning, the Lord appears as a beautiful Damsel - Nacchiyar Tirukkolam [நாச்சியார் திருக் கோலம்].

The Lord is in Golden palanquin. Before dawn, the Lord goes through the Four streets around the temple. Seeing Him in Woman's form, we may wonder whether He is really She! When Sri Rama declined to take Sri Sita, along with Him to forest, She ridiculed whether He was a Woman in Male form! He adores today all ornaments of Sri Perundevi Thayar! He then visits Thoopul to bless Swami Desika and reaches Gangaikondan Mandapam. In the evening He is in procession on Yali Vahanam!

Krodhakrut means develops anger! Jamadagni, father of Sri Parashu Rama, was unjustifiably killed and this developed anger in Sri Parashu Rama. He vowed to kill all Kshatriyas.

Got His anger quenched, in Sri Parashu Rama Avatara, after killing Kshatriyas of this Earth, in Twenty One generations, with His axe.

On the Fourth Day, the Lord appears as Sri Paramapada Nathan, along with Sri Ubhaya Nacchiyars. He is seated on Adisesha.

One leg is folded and the other is stretched. Till last Divine name, that is from Divine name 301 to 313, the Lord's appearance on the tender banyan leaf [Sri Vata Patra Sayee] was explained. From now on till Divine name 321, Eight Divine names describe Sri Parashu Rama Avatar. He took His axe weapon and killed all Kshatriyas [Rulers] of 21 generations. Krodhagna means anger suppressed. After killing Kshatriyas in 21 Generations, Kashyap Prajapti, requested Him to discard anger and so suppressed His anger. He threw away His axe in the ocean and reclaimed that area as His and it is Kerala today. The Lord as Sri Paramapada Nathan, arrives at Vahana Mandapam, and strolls with very little ornaments. At that time, safron is made into a paste and applied on His body. This is called 'vizhudhu kaapu [விழுது காப்பு]'. When worshiping here, we may wonder, whether this Lord could ever be angry?! In the evening the Lord is in procession in Chandra Prabha, and showers coolness - opposed to the quality in Sri Parashu Rama Avatar. On return, Nel alavai utsavam [நெல் அளவை உத்ஸவம்] is celebrated, when auditing of income and expenditure is done!

Devotees are drenched in His captivating form and by His sweet words.

Third day of Brahmotsavam is the most eagerly awaited Garudasevai in the early morning!

Garuda is holding the Divine feet, which redeem everyone from this samsaram. Even in British rule, during Garuda sevai, entire district was declared holiday. Swami Doddayacharya, who used to worship this Garuda sevai without fail, was once indisposed and could not attend. The Lord out of compassion for that great devotee, disappeared from Kanchi, for a while, to be present in Sholingapuram to grace Swami Doddayacharya! This is enacted even now, before start of the procession! Swami Desika says that the Lord of Kanchi showers rain of Moksham! The Lord graces Thoopul, birth place of Swami Desika, where one umbrella is lowered as mark of respect for the great devotee! It is believed that Ganga Devi performs pooja on Vaikasi Pournami day at the Sarvatheertham pond. Since the Lord accepted that pooja, the mandapam there is called Gangai Kondan mandapam [கங்கை கொண்டான் மண்டபம்]. In the evening on the Third day, the Lord appears on Hanumanta vahanam.

Binds people by His miraculous power.

During Brahmotsavam, the Lord displays various ornaments and dresses, never repeating. This festival starts on Vaikasi Hastam with Dwajarohanam and ends on the next day of Vaikasi Shravanam [when there will be Theertavari], with Dwaja avarohanam. After Simha vahanam on First evening, in His sannidhi is celebrated 'Irandam Saatthu [இரண்டாம் சாத்து]'. On the Second day, in the morning the Lord is on procession on Hamsa vahanam.

In the evening the Lord is in procession in Surya Prabha.

Nahusha means binding. Vaikasi-Visaka, in Nammalwar's birthday. On that day, the Lord arrives at Nammalwar sannidhi. We are bound by our Karmas. Punya is like golden shackles and papa is like iron shackles. Our actions result in papa/punya.

[This telecast of SVS was held up for a week from 25th May and we should have resumed from Divine name 306. But since arrangements at Kanchipuram to coincide with Brahmotsavam were already made, we start the series with SVS divine name 311. It is proposed to restart from Divine name 306 to 310, from the lectures beginning after Two weeks.]

From today [1st June 2009] the lectures are from the Brahmotsavam in Kanchipuram. Swami Vedanta Desika has praised this Brahmotsavam in his works. It takes place for Ten days, both in the day and night, in Vaikasi month, every year. Processions start from the temple in Vishnu Kanchi, aka Little Kanchi, to Gangaikondan [கங்கை கொண்டான்] mandapam in Shiva Kanchi, aka Big Kanchi, and return procession. Crowds assemble from all parts of the country. It is lead by Divya Prabhanda Ghoshti and followed by Veda Parayana Ghoshti.
Shikhandi means special Crown to denote His valour. On the first day of Brahmotsavam, after Dwajarohanam in the day, the Lord Sri Varadaraja is in procession on Simha [Lion] vahanam in the evening. Two large umbrellas are deployed during procession.

There is a Sri Krishna temple in Thopputheru nearby. It is in shambles, requiring urgent help of devotees. Addhrushya means unexplainable deeds. Sage Markandeya, with all his devotion, could not understand the Lord's deeds.

Q&A:
Is it necessary to light oil lamps in our pooja room?
It is very auspicious to light such lamps in the morning and evening, even if electric lamps are there.

Which oil should be used?
We should never use cheap or wasted oil for lamps. Pure gingelly oil [sesame or til oil] or pure ghee are to be used. For specific remedies, other oils could be used; these could be obtained by approaching elders in the family.

In Kumbakonam, Sri Sudarshana graces with Sri Vijayalakshmi Thayar. Sri Chakrapani is considered as another form of the Lord. Mamangam Kulam [மாமாங்கம் குளம்] is famous and once in Twelve years devotees from all over India assemble and take bath. Also on Akshaya Tridiyai [அக்ஷய திருதீயை], the rare festival of 12 Garuda seva, is celebrated annually. Mahasana means great eater! His food is all great Seven worlds, seven oceans and seven great mountains. After devouring all these, His hunger is not satisfied! Then, the Lord as an Infant, is lying on a tender banyan leaf! Why does He suck His toe? Great persons say that by sucking amrut flowing in His Divine feet, all, stored in His stomach, are properly protected!

Possesses many amazing actions like reclining as an infant on a floating banyan tender leaf.

We are in Sri Ramaswamy temple in Kumbakonam. The idols of Sri Rama in Vaduvur, Thillaivilagam and Kumbakonam have an unique charm! He was like Moon for Chakora birds of people of Ayodya, says Swami Vedanta Desika! Valmiki's Srimad Ramayana was sang before Sri Rama in Ayodya, by Lava and Kusha, to the accompaniment of Veena instrument. Likewise, in this temple Hanuman is holding Veena and singing before Sri Rama! Naikamaya means not one maya [miracle], but many! Maya, here does not mean illusion. Sri Sita got Her name as She was found while ploughing the Earth, to perform Yagna. His Vishwaroopam is another Maya. In a ocean with large waves, the Lord sleeps on a tender leaf floating on water. This was after He swallowed all Universe and stored in His stomach! It is beyond our imagination! We can not find answer to the question, where the leaf came from? Thiruppanalwar says Aala ma maratthin ilai mel oru balaganai Gyalam ezhum undan [ஆல மா மரத்தின் இலை மேல் ஒரு பாலகனாய், ஞாலம் ஏழும் உண்டான்].

Entire Ramayana is depicted in colorful paintings. The Lord is accompanied by Sri Sita, His Four brothers, Vibheeshana, Hanuman and others. The Lord has ordained that the Four yugs follow a cycle. The Lord says He appears in every yug, when there is loss of Dharma. In Raghuveera gadyam, Swami Vedanta Desika says that Sri Rama who appeared in Treta yug, established the superior Dharma of Krita yug!

The Lord during pralaya is Sri Vatapatra Sayi [ஸ்ரீ வட பத்ர சாயீश्री वट पत्र सायी]. Today's [18th May 2009] lecture is from Sri Adi Varaha temple in Kumbakonam. Here also the pond is misused and abused. While visiting a temple, we should see all works like compound wall, pond, etc., and not merely visit the garbhagruha. There is a pralaya, when lord Brahma goes to sleep. But there is a greater pralaya, when his term expires! Then the Lord again starts creations. before that the Lord as a tiny baby, is seen on a tender banyan leaf, afloat on water. All Universe and all Worlds are in His stomach!

Sri Thayar of this Bhaskara Kshetram is Sri Komalavalli Thayar [ஸ்ரீ கோமளவல்லி தாயார்]. She is in separate sannidhi . Behind the temple is Potramarai Kulam [பொற்றாமரைக்குளம் ]. Thirumangai Alwar has praised the Car [ther தேர்] of this temple, which is gigantic and in past, it has taken so many days to return to its base after procession. Taking bath in this pond on specific days, will grant us many benefits; but as usual, we do not maintain the pond clean. Should we not ponder over this? Prabhu means Lord. Everyone prays Sri Maha Lakshmi for wealth. During Amruta matanam, Sri Maha Lakshmi emerged. Her mere passing glance, got many Devas, their lost position and wealth. But only One Person was minding His business and was not looking at Her! She was surprised and looked at Him constantly; and He became the Lord of entire Universe!

Whatever is desired is granted.

The Lord grants whatever we desire. After all we do things expecting a reward! We desire health, wealth, etc. Many can grant these, but only the Lord Sri Janardhana, can grant all these and Moksham! In Kumbakonam, there lived a couple, who did not have any child. They prayed to Sri Aaravamuda and decided that if a child was born, he would be dedicated in His service. They got a son and named him, Lakshmi Narayana. He remained bachelor and spent all his life in His service. Once Lakshmi Narayana died on Aippasi Amavasya, that is on Deepavali day. Being a bachelor, there was no one to perform last rites. In Srimad Ramayana, Sri Rama performed last rites of Jatayu, a vulture! When Ravana was killed, Sri Rama asked Vibheeshana to do the last rites for his brother. When Vibheeshana showed reluctance, Sri Rama offered to do the last rites for Ravana Himself! Later, Vibheeshana did the last rites. In Kumbakonam, the Lord did the last rites for Lakshmi Narayana!

He granted Manmadha [Love god], the power of amour, to mesmerize the World.

Like in Srirangam, the Lord is reclining; but He is in utthana sayana, that is He is about to raise up! Alwar pities that because of tiredness in rescuing His devotees, the Lord is resting! So as He was about to raise to welcome Alwar, Alwar hurriedly requested Him not to take that trouble! Main sannidhi has Two entrances - Uttharayana and Dakshinayana gates, each opened alternately after Six months! In Aparyamruta sopanam, the great Acharya, Swami Thirukkudanthai Desika, describes the beauty of the Lord Sri Sarngapani!

With Divine form and others, desired by all.

Kantha means Husband or Darling. The Lord was so beautiful that He was attracted by even enemies like Surpanaka and Ravana. If we commit sins, we can wash them in sacred places; sins committed in sacred places could be washed in Kasi. What about sins committed in Kasi? They could be nullified only in Kumbakonam! Mahamaha popularly known as Mamanga [மாமாங்கம்] pond is very famous. The Lord Sri Aravamuda was responsible for Nalayira Divya Prabhandam now available to us. Listening to the Ten pasurams on Sri Aravamuda, Swami Nathamuni, was desirous to know all pasurams, started his search and after herculean efforts obtained all the pasurams of Nalayira Divya Prabhandam, from Nammalwar directly. He then preached to his disciples, who sang them in proper metre and in melodious tunes!

In His devotees, desire in Him, is induced by Him.

We are now in Thirukkudanthai [திருக்குடந்தை] aka Kumbakonam. The Lord is Sri Sarngapani or Sri Aaramuda Azhvan. This Divine name says that the Lord grows desire in us! Earlier, He is responsible for destroying our inferior desires and changing them as desires in Him. Here, the Lord cultivates desire in Him! Aaravamudan means never satisfied [in drinking] the nectar of the Lord. Amudam is nectar got out of churning ocean. But here, He is the nectar obtained by churning Vedas, by Nammalwar!

Sri Andal, that is why says, matrai nam kamangal matru [மற்றை நம் காமங்கள் மாற்று..]! Villagers in Alagar malai, donate the produce from their fields on Chitra Pournami day. Prahalada prays that he should be blessed with the same desire, which we normally have in Worldly matters, at His Divine feet!

Unsatisfied with any amount of help to the devotees.

For Madhurakavi Alwar, Nammlwar was all and he said he did not know any other God. Swami Vedanta Desika that is why says the by following God, one might get some sufferings; but those following His devotees are free from any suffering. An Acharya is necessary. While Sri Ranganatha is urangum perumal [உறங்கும் பெருமாள்], an Acharya is ulavum perumal [உலாவும் பெருமாள்]! Anala means fire. It purifies and its capacity to devour is limitless. A whole city or forest could be consumed by flames! Similarly, the Lord can not be satisfied easily, in rendering help. Sri Krishna at the end of His Avatar, felt that He had not helped enough, Draupati. This is, in spite of granting sarees to save her modesty and waging Mahabharatha war to kill all those who were responsible in that indecent act!

Blesses sacred things like Ganges, with sanctity.

Like Madurakavi Alwar, Swami Nadathur Ammal [நடாதூர் அம்மாள்] was also born in Chitrai - Chitra [சித்திரை-சித்திரை]. We should realize the greatness of our Acharyas. Their birth days should be celebrated to spread the message to our progeny. He was born as Vatsya Varada Guru and was a very great devotee of Lord Varadaraja of Kanchi! He would offer milk to the Lord, in the night, with as much care as a mother would and so he was called by the Lord Himself, as 'amma' [அம்மா in Tamil, mother]. He thus became Swami Nadathur Ammal! The Lord is sacred and no blemishes could be attributed to Him. Thus the water used by lord Brahma to wash His Divine feet, when He raised His leg in Sri Trivikrama Avatar and when it reached Satya Loka, became sacred and flowed as Ganga! Lord Shiva realizing the sanctity of that water, received it on his head and got sanctified.

292. OM PAVANAYA NAMA: ॐ पवनाय नम:
He is the motive force in wind; His blessings are responsible for wind energy.

We are in Neeralur, on the National Highway between Chennai and Bangalore. It is believed that Swami Ramanuja appeared as a snake and showed the Jeer of Sri Ahobnila Mutt, presence of water here! Vimanam is called Jala koti vimanam. Here many people pray to Vimanam, sanctified by the Jeer! We can see Sri Ugra Narasimha, Who has been guarding this temple. There is no separate sannidhi for Sri Thayar. Pavana means wind. Wind causes waves in ocean and as hurricane, could cause extensive devastation. Once a test of strength was organized between Adisesha and Vayu [Pavana], according to Sri Venkatachala Mahatmyam. While Adisesha coiled around a hill, Vayu was to show his might and throw away the mountain. Despite full strength, Vayu could not even shake the mountain. Vayu feared defeat and the Lord signalled Adisesha to slightly relent and Vayu was able to force a piece of the mountain to fly and this dropped on Earth as Tirumala hills!

291. OM BHOOTHA BHAVYA BHAVAN NATHAYA NAMA: ॐ भूतभव्यभवन्नाथाया नम:
He is the Lord in all the three times [past, present and future].

Ten Divine names are to be found in this sloka 32. Thus according to Swami Prasara Bhatta's commentary on SVS, 300 Divine names of the Lord would get completed in this sloka! Today's [4th May 2009] lecture is from Neeralur [நீரளூர்], near Kanchipuram. Once poet Avvaiyar, cursed this place to go dry; but the 6th Jeer of Sri Ahobhila Mutt, prayed and got water, which is aplenty now. This place is also called Sri Bhashya puram. This Jeer was the one who entered the cave in Ahobhilam and is believed to be alive even today inside the cave. It is also believed that Sri Vamana of Thiruvaranvilai in Kerala, is gracing here. The Lord here is Sri Veetrirundha Narayana [ஸ்ரீ வீற்றிருந்த நாராயணன்]. This Divine name was earlier mentioned in SVS 11 as Bhhotabhavyabhavat Prabhu. Both Divine names 4 and 291 convey the same. It is the custom of great people to repeat important things. He is the Lord of all at all times. While there are many as leaders in this World and in other worlds like heaven and Sathya loka, they are temporary and persons occupying will come back after tenure is over! But the Lord, unequalled and unsurpassed, is the Leader always in the past, present and in future!

290. OM SATYADHARMAPARAKRAMAYA NAMA: ॐ सत्यधर्मं पराक्रमाय नम:
He protects the Universe, without causing any blemish to His auspicious qualities or to His valour.

Poigai Alwar was born in Thiruvekkha. Thirumazhisai Alwar lived here. Acharyas like Swami Desika and Swami Manavala Mamunigal lived here. When Thirumazhisai Alwar's disciple was exiled from this place, Alwar also went away; he ordered the Lord also to follow them! King got frightened and requested Alwar to return along with the disciple. He agreed and ordered the Lord also to return! Therefore, the Lord is sonna vannam seyyum Perumal. Though the Lord is the mightiest, He is also compassionate to His devotees. There is a place Orirukkai [ஓரிருக்கை] near Kanchi, where Alwar with disciple and the Lord of Thiruvekkha, stayed for one night, before returning to their place! In Srimad Ramayana, while fighting Indrajit, Lakshmana, sent a missile after proclaiming that if Sri Rama were righteous and had real valour, that missile should kill Indrajit. And Indrajit was killed! He is therefore, satyadharma parakrama! We can see the pond in which Poigai Alwar was born. It is our duty to maintain it clean.

Never fails to grant punya/papa to the World.

The Lord is reclining at Thiruvekkha [in Kanchi] as a check dam [anai அணை] or bridge [sethu सेतु]. Earlier, He was told as both medicine and Doctor. Here, He is the barrier between good and eveil things. When Saraswati came speedily as a river to spoil the Yagna performed by her husband Brahma, the Lord remained as a barrier and prevented the mishap. Thus He acted according to the prayers of Brahma. He is thus called Sri Yatoktakari [श्री यतोक्तकारि ] or Sri Sonna vannam seyyum Perumal [ஸ்ரீ சொன்ன வண்ணம் செய்யும் பெருமாள்]. This Kshetram is also not maintained neatly, by visitors. We lack the responsibility to preserve our heritage!

He is the cure for rebirths.

Srimad ramanuja charanou sharanam prabhatye Srimate ramanujaya nama:
In 2017, we would be fortunate to celebrate Swami Ramanuja's 1001st Birthday! We should follow his teachings and celebrate. Aushadham means medicine. For every disease there is a particular medicine. Similarly, there are medicines for rescuing from death, as we see Hanuman bringing Sanjivini to rescue Lakshmana. Alwar says the Lord is both medicine and Doctor. Swami Ramanuja was able to cure the disease caused to Vedas, by people who interpreted Vedas wrongly and made Vedas to suffer. Half baked people are more dangerous! While the Lord is Veda Vedyan [knows all Vedas], Swami Ramanuja is Veda Vaidyan [doctor for Vedas]!

Uplifts further, those on right path.

Swami Ramanuja wanted to seek Swami Periya Nambi and so he proceeded from Kanchi to Srirangam. At the same time Swami Periya Nambi proceeded from Srirangam to Kanchi to meet Swami Ramanuja! This is Divine act of the God and both accidentally met in Madurantakam. Here Swami Periya Nambi preached Swami Ramanuja, who is seen not with safron robes but ordinary white robes. Sureswara means the Lord encourages devotees on right path to go further up, to greater heights! If we follow Shastras, the Lord encourages. Swami Ramanuja wanted to follow the Lord's 'aaru vaarthai', and the Lord helped in bringing Swami Periya Nambi nearer to him! The Lord provides opportunities equally to all; but He encourages those following right path.

Destroys those treading evil path.

We are at Poovirundavalli popularly known as Poonamalle. Our country boasts of many noble persons. Swami Ramanuja told that all can reach Moksham, provided they had the following of good Acharya. Commentaries on Brahma sootram were made by Swami Ad Sankaracharya, Swami Ramanuja and Swami Madvacharya. The birth days of Swami Adi Sankara and Swami Ramanuja fall on the same day [this year it is on 29th April, 2009]. Swami Ramanuja got his doubts clarified through Swami Thirukkacchi Nambi, who was born in Poovirundavalli and who was gifted to converse with Lord Sri Varadaraja of Kanchipuram! He got the clarifications as:

He, the Lord of Sri Lakshmi, is the Paratatvam or the God.
Bhedam or difference in jeevatman and Paramatman, is the right philosophy.
Prapatti or ultimate surrender to God, is the way for Moksham.
Not necessary to remember God at the last moments [after doing prapatti].
Moksham after soul leaves current body [for those having done prapatti].
[Swami Ramanuja] to approach Swami Periya Nambi as Acharya.

These are called aaru varthai [ஆறு வார்த்தை] and are the backbone of Swami Ramanuja Sampradhaya. Shashabindu means removing evils. The Lord removes evils to rescue good. His main determination is to save bhaktas or good people, who had surrendered to Him. In the process, evil is removed.

He grants brightness to Sun and other such luminous objects.

Sri Varaha grants us Gyana. Vedas say Moon originated from the mind of the Lord. Krishna indicates both Sri Varaha and Sri Krishna. While painting our forehead with Thiruman [திருமண்], we have to pray to Sri Bhudevi - Mother Earth, to protect us! There Sri Varaha is indicated by the word Krishna!

Has the valour to dispel enemies, like darkness dispelled by the Sun.

Mahabalipuram is the birthplace of Boothathalwar. The Lord is reclining in the ground and so He is Sri Sthalasayana Perumal. Chandramshu indicated that the Lord is able to shower cool blessings like amrut! Bha means brilliance. Enemies are unable to bear His brilliance. Sri Rama was able to destroy 14,000 rakshasas in Janasthana. He was angry, when His devotees were harmed. Anger should be shown at appropriate place and time. Being angry always is not good. In sandyavandanam, we imagine the Lord to be at the core of the Sun! In Mahabalipuram also, like in Thiruppullani, sea bath [samudra snanam] can be had anytime. Many disputes are resolved by worshiping here.

Like the Moon, He showers prosperity on His devotees and delights them.

The Lord is gracing as Sri Sthalasayana Perumal in Thirukkadalmallai [திருக் கடல்மல்லை], popularly known as Mahabalipuram. When we come to this place from Chennai, we come across another Kshetram, Thiruvidavendai [திரு இடவெந்தை], where the Lord is Sri Varaha aka Sri Nitya Kalyana Perumal. In Mahabalipuram, near the main sannidhi is another sannidhi of Thiruvalavendai [திரு வலவெந்தை]. He is also called Sri Gyanapiran [ஸ்ரீ ஞானப் பிரான்].

In Thiruvidavendhai, the Lord Sri Varaha is holding Sri Bhudevi on His left hand, while as Thiruvalavendhai, He is holding Her in His right hand! Chittirai - Utthirattadhi [சித்திரை-உத்திரட்டாதி] is Sri Varaha Jayanti. Chandramsu means like the Moon, He showers the nectar or amrut. Sages meditating on Him, are happy to see Moon. Sri Rama is compared to the Moon, as everyone wants to see Him again and again! Bird Chakora [சகோர பட்சி] is said to live by drinking the Moon rays! Moon has limitations; but the Lord has nil. He was attractive even to sages, who had renounced all desires!

281. OM MANTRAYA NAMA: ॐ मन्त्राय नम:
Protects those meditating on Him.

Vadapalli is near Miriyalguda in Andhra Pradesh. The Lord is personified by mantras and so can be meditated with mantrams. Spashtakshara means words formed by clears syllables. Or, the Lord speaks only clear syllables. We worship the Lord with mantras of Vedas. These sacred syllables are in Vedas and in Itihasa and Puranas. Sri Narasimha is in Vadapalli, which is at the convergence of Two sacred rivers. We see Two lamps, one near His feet and the other near His nose. While the lamp at His feet is steady, one near the nose is wavering, indicating His breath. It is a great wonder. Sage Agastya meditated here and Agastya is the founder of Tamil language. In Thirumogur, Sri Sudarsana is engraved with Sudarsana mantra and so is very sacred. In Sri Ahobila Mutt, the Man Deity and Sri Dolai Kannan are sanctified with mantras. Mantra means again and again the Lord is worshiped with mantras acquired properly from Acharyas. He protects people who worship Him with such mantras. In Varaha Charama sloka, the Lord Sri Bhuvaraha tells that if one worships Him, when all organs are properly functioning, then He takes care of them, when they are in death bed like a wood or stone.

Sri Nrusimha came out of pillar. His dwajasthambam is magnificent in Sri Mattapalli. Going around Dwajasthambam, Eleven times, brings us prosperity. Sitting in the cave inside garbhagruha, enthralls us. The mountain is Adisesha and its shape reveals this. Sri Utsavar is dazzling with Ratnangi. The Lord is worshiped with aare leaves [ஆரே பத்ரம் आरे पत्र . Here the great devotee Susroni attained supreme place after performing pooja with aare leaves. Ruddha means bountiful. There is no deficiency nor defect!

Capable of burning enemies.

Today's lecture is also from Sri Mattapalli.
Ekameva kshetram mattapalli kshetram | Nanyatu kshetram mattapalli tulyam ||

Sri Mattapalli is the only Kshetram and none equals it! It was worshiped by Sapta Rishis [seven great sages]. Maha advaryu UVe. Sri Mukkur Lakshmi Narasimhachariyar was greatly attached to this Kshetram. We can see a cave where sage Bharadwaja is still meditating. Entrance is very small and we are asked not to go in and disturb the meditation! This Kshetram is a prayaschitta or parikara sthalam - that is we can come here and make amends to our papa! Hiranyakasipu fell into the fire of Sri Narasimha and got killed. Hiranyam means gold and to purify gold, one puts it in fire! Pratapa means burning away. Bahradwaja, even in Three hundred years could not master Vedas. Indra showed him handful of mud and said what the sage had learnt was only that much, while what was yet to be learnt was like huge mountains yonder, Indra showed! Realizing his limitation, sage Bharadwaja came here and is still meditating on the Lord Sri Narasimha!

Rajyalakshmyasametaya ragadwesha vinasine| Mattapalli nivasaya sri nrusimhaya mangalam ||
Sri Mattapalli Kshetram is on the banks of river Krishna, in Andhra Pradesh. Visit to this Kshetram will rid us of all bad things and grant us all good things in life. We will also, talk about the glory of UVe. Sri Mukkur LakshmiNarasimhachariyar, who had chanted more than a Million times, the Divine name of Sri Narasimha and who had performed Sri Nrusimha Yagna, more than Hundred times! After destroying Hiranyakasipu, the Brilliance of Sri Narasimha was too difficult for all to bear and Prahalada was requested to pacify the Lord. Heeding to the prayers of Prahalada, His prakasam [brilliance] was bearable in the World. He is now gracing at many temples like Sri Mattapalli. Sri Krishna made Arjuna to worship His Viswaroopam, by donating divine eyes to Arjuna. Not only that. Dridarashtra, who, according to Swami Ramanuja, was blind externally and internally, the Lord made Himself available to be seen. Yes, Dridarashtra was ignorant of the greatness of the Lord. That is Prakashatma! He is gracing at Sri Mattapalli.

Possesses might, strength and brilliance.

In this divine name Three qualities are mentioned. This is common in Sankara and Madwa commentaries also. Only He, Who possesses Six qualities - Gyanam, Shakti, Balam, Aiswaryam, Veeryam and Tejas - is called Bhagavan [भगवान]. Only the Lord possesses all these Six qualities and so He is the only Bhagavan. But we use this title for others also out of respect only! His brilliance causes shivers in enemies and enthuses devotees! Sri Rama destroyed 14,000 rakshasas, alone and His valour was appreciated by Sri Sita with an embrace!

For devotees desiring to view Him, presents brightly.

Every year Sri Rama navami festival is celebrated grandly. Here Pattabhishekam is celebrated as Kanakabhishekam. Shipivishta indicated His radiance. This Divine name prakashanaya also indicates His brightness. Arjuna wanted to view the Lord's Vishwaroopam; the Lord granted Arjuna Divine eyes to worship Him! To Mandodari, the Lord presented Himself with Four arms! Sages of Dandakaranya, were delighted to see the Lord in robes of sages!

Through rays, pervading everywhere.

Today's [8th April 2009] lecture is also from Sri Oppiliappan Koil. In most of the temples, the Lord's idols [bhera] are in Five forms: Moola bhera, Utsava bhera, Stapana bhera, Nityotsava bhera and Yaga bhera. This is indicated by naikaroopa [SVS 292]. The Lord is the cause of brilliance of all luminous objects like the Sun, fire,etc. Swami Desika says prabhavan sitaya devya paramavyoma bhaskara [Raghuveera gatyam]. We notice brilliance on the face of great devotees. Sri Sita says She can never part Sri Rama and is like luminescence of light- inseparable! In Oppiliappan Koil, no function is celebrated without Swami Desika! When Ravana is beaten, he sees Sriman Narayana in Sri Rama!

In such forms, each Form spreads over all directions, upper worlds and the in between.

Vaikuntam is also called Thiruvinnagar as Oppiliappan Koil. Like Viraja there, Nattaru flows here. Nammalwar says Sri Oppiliyappan is all for him.

In bruhadroopa, the Lord's very large and all pervading image is indicated.The Lord took Viswaroopam in Gita. In Duryodana's assembly, He took a large form and defeated the evil designs of Duryodana.

He graces in Vishvaroopam, with many, many forms!

Till now we saw various Divine names explaining His name Narayana. From now on, Swami Parasara Bhatta explains the Divine names with respect to the Lord's Vishwaroopam. This is the next petal in the lotus of SVS. We are in Sri Oppiliyappan koil, where we are worshiping Sri Rama in the temple. Here for Ten days Sri Rama Navami is celebrated. Especially, Putrakameshti yaga is performed here. Devotees can worship and get the blessings of the Lord. Naikaroopa = na + eka roopa, that is not one image. The Lord Himself was born as Sri Rama and His brothers. When Devas were suffering because of Ravana, they prayed lord Brahma to help them; but having granted the boons, Brahma could not do anything and all of them prayed the Lord, Who appeared on Garuda. Devas prayed the Lord to take Avatar as a Human and kill Ravana. Here we have to remember, Devas could have prayed for killing Ravana only; because the Lord controlled lord Brahma, and the boons granted by Brahma were not binding on the Lord. Yet, to please Devas He took Sri Rama avatar! He appears as desired by the devotees and He is not restricting to any single image!

We are in Pullambutamkudi, near Kumbakonam. The Lord here is Sri Dhruda Dhanvi Rama or Sri Val Vil Rama [ஸ்ரீ வல் வில் இராமன்].

It is no wonder that friends praise a person. But it is almost unheard that enemies praise a person. Such great qualities were possessed by Sri Rama and He was praised by enemies like Vaali, Ravana, Soorpanaka, etc. In killing Vaali, Vaali himself finally agreed that Sri Rama did the right thing; but unfortunately, even now people debate whether what Sri Rama did was right or not! Today [3rd April 2009] being Sriramanavami, we offer the Divine name vasu at His feet.The name Sri Rama itself is a mangala or auspicious name. Vasu means wealth. The Lord Himself is wealth to His devotees! This wealth never diminishes! Sri Sita tells that wherever Sri Rama is, that place was Ayodya for Her!

Grants material comforts to those desiring.

Today's [2ndApril 2009] lecture is from Ponpadirkoodam [பொன் பதிர் கூடம்] near Chengalput. Here the Lord appears with Four arms and so is called Sri Chaturbhuja Rama. Mandodari arrives at the battlefield to look at the dead body of Ravana, her husband. When she looks up at Sri Rama, He appeared to her as the Lord Sriman Narayana with Four arms, appreciating Her chastity! That scene is depicted here! He grants anything to anyone. Before departing to forest, obeying His parents' order, Sri Rama donates. One very poor Brahmin requests Sri Rama for wealth. Sri Rama gave him a stick and asked the Brahmin to throw it as far as possible; and, Sri Rama promised He would grant all wealth upto the place where the stick fell. Sri Rama told that He did not ask the Brahmin to do that as a test, but to satisfy Brahmin's mind! Vasu [வஸு वसु] means wealth. He grants wealth in this world and the most superior wealth of Moksham also.

Today's [1st April 2009] is from Maduranthakam, also known as Dwayam vilainda Tirupati [த்வயம் விளைந்த திருப்பதி]. This is a historically important Kshetram.

In this Kshetram Swami Periya Nambi performed Pancha samskaram for Swami Ramanuja. An unique feature of this temple is Sri Utsavar, Lord Sri Rama appears with bow and arrow, but not the receptacle for arrows [Tamil amburathuni அம்புராத்துணி] on His right shoulder; while Lakshmana has it! This minute detail has to be carefully observed.

Swami Ramanuja had his panchasamskaram beneath a magizha [மகிழ] tree, behind Sri Andal sannidhi.

Here Swami Ramanuja is with white robes, that is before he renunciated and became a sanyasi.
Sri Moolavar, Lord Sri Rama, has also an unique feature. Here the Lord is holding the hand of Sri Sita and is said to be when Sri Sita alighted from Pushpaka vimanam! The wealth, the Lord grants is everlasting. He is described as jangama parijata - mobile karpaka vruksham. Karpaka vruksham, grants anything to those who go to it. But the Lord grants anything to His devotees and He arrives at their place to grant! Because He is Mahendra, He was able to grant Vibheeshana, the Kingdom of Lanka, even before killing Ravana!

Hanuman admires at the strong shoulders of Sri Rama, in the Divine name subhuja. When Sri Rama departed to the forest, minister Sumantra accompanied Him upto river Ganges. Sri Rama applied the resin of banyan tree to his hair, so that they would remain in tact! Unable to bear this sight, Sumantra asked Dasarata on return as to why he gave Sumantra this punishment of seeing Sri Rama entering forests. On hearing this, Dasarata's soul departed!

Has broad shoulders to take the responsibilities of those surrendered.

We are at Bittur, Valmiki's Ashram. The Lion Valmiki roars Sri Rama and drives away all evils. When once he could not take bath in Ganges, he was about to bathe in nearby Thamasa river, he saw a hunter killing the male of a bird couple and reprimanded the hunter for this inhuman act. But, that reprimand became the mangala sloka for the start of Srimad Ramayana! Here, once Sri Sita's children Lav and Kush, reigned in the sacrificial horse sent by emperor Sri Rama. This provoked Hanuman to fight with Lav and Kush, to get back the horse. While both the fighting parties did not know the antecedents of each other, Lav and Kush, could bind Hanuman to a tree! We are shown that tree here. All these show that the Lord takes enormous efforts to protect His devotees. Unfortunately, we do not keep these sacred rivers clean. Sri Rama is famous for His magnificent shoulders and arms. Sri Sita used His shoulders as pillows! With such shoulders to protect, Sri Sita was never scared of the wild animals in the forests!

Like Ocean to rivers, He is to Vedas.

We are at Bittur, on the banks of Ganges, where Valmiki had his Ashram. Sri Sita delivered Lava and Kusha. Srutisagara means the destination of Vedas. Vedas are like ocean; but if we compare them to a river, then the Lord is like Ocean for that river! Like the Lord, Vedas are eternal. If Vedas are theory, Ramayana is practical! Prachetas [प्रचेतस] is Varuna, and so Valmiki, his son is Praachetas [प्राचेतस]. Sri Rama, the Hero of Ramayana, is embodiment of Vedas!

We are back to Nagamangala, on the Mangalore highway, in Karnataka. Swami Ramanuja had installed a tall Vijayasthamba in this temple. The Lord Sri Kesava is gracing. On Ugadi [Telugu New Year day] [this year it is on 27^th March 2009], Sun's rays fall at His feet and it is feature to be seen. Vivikta means different. The Lord is Unique and different from all others. He is Sreeapathi [Consort of Sri Mahalakshmi] and Jagatpathi [Leader of Universe]. Others can never have these. He Himself does not know His glory!

Sri Jalanarayana is in Katmandu, in a pond, attracting everyone, with splendour. Similar idol is in the Palace also. The Lord is happy at the devotion of the Devotees and blesses them. With His blessings, the Devotees are happier; and, the Lord seeing them happier, is much more happier! This happiness is much more than parents' happiness on their children's happiness! Sri Rama was happy when His subjects were happier.

We can see huge idol of Lord Sri Narayana, reclining on Adisesha, as Sri Jala Narayana in Kathmandu. The Lord remaining in water protects our health. In a satire, this compared to old cooked rice in water for good health [பழையது]! In this divine name vardhana, the Lord acts to improve and increase our bhakti! In Gita sloka 'ananyaschintayanto mam', the Lord says that a thought unadulterated in Him, will mean yoga kshemam for us.

Makes varnasrama dharma as steps to reach Him.

In Salagrama Kshetra sage Jatabharata attained Mukti. He was great yogi and performed duties as ordained by the Lord in Varnasrama Dharma. That is performing duties assigned to anyone, in Shastras. Sandyavandanam and Bhagavad Aradanam, should be performed by those assigned to do. Jatabharata's story is told in Srimad Bhagavatam and in Vishnu Puranam. While doing meditation, he rescued a fawn and slowly got attached to it. When he died, his mind was full of fawn and so was born as the young one of Deer. Later, he was born as a human and realizing his mistake in earlier birth, kept totally detached and remained like a jatam [inert]. Later, when he was used by King Rahuguna, to carry his palanquin, King realized Jatabharata's greatness and learnt philosophy.

It is better to visit Sri Muktinath, before we become too old to undertake arduous journey. This Divine name was mentioned in SVS 9 earlier; later, after another 600 Divine names, Vishnu is going to be repeated! Thus He is pervading everywhere! `Vishu means all pervading and this Divine name occurs in Mantrarajan also. Salagrama is a fossil, and is the resident of the Lord. Sri Vishnu aradanam is the most superior.

It is always sacred, while Archa [idols] are to be sanctified by religious rites. People suffer in samsara tapa traya. Sri Andal prays in Anganma gyalam pasuram, to glance Her so that Her curses would be eliminated.

It is in Nepal and reaching it, is difficult, in spite of modern facilities. But one need not feel despair. If we worship the Salagrama in our house, it is as good as visiting Sri Salagramam. There is no use in visiting Kshetrams, if we do not worship our house hold Salagrama. This place has been visited by Swami Ramanuja, Thirumangai Alwar, Swami Vedanta Desika and others. River Kantaki flows here. Vrushahi suggests that the day has dawned to realize Him, after wasting time in many births.

He makes devotion to Him, is as pleasant as He is.

The Lord is full of the Six qualities [that make Him, Bhagavan] and can grant the Eight siddhis. He can also grant the ever blissful Vaikuntam. But that happiness after one's death. Till then? In this Divine name, it is suggested that by mere chanting His names and Bhakti, the same bliss is realized! It is like a bachelor counting the days for marriage and living happily on the thoughts of the marriage to take place! A Bhakta remains happily for the union with the Lord in Vaikuntam. In nama sankeertanam, Bahkti is essential.

Siddhida means, grants enormous results, to those who worship Him. There are eight great siddhia [accomplishments] like anima, mahima, etc. Hanuman, with His blessings, was able to make himself very small to be invisible at Lanka! This is anima siddhi! This type of siddhi should not be used for selfishness. Also these siddhis will never get Moksham. Hanuman was able to fly in air by making him very light [lagima siddhi]. In Mahabharata, when Bhima met his brother Hanuman and thought he was merely a monkey, Bhima could not even lift Hanuman's tail. Hanuman exhibited the balima siddhi!

253. OM SIDDHA SANKALPAYA NAMA: ॐ सिद्ध संकल्पाय नम:
Possesses skill to accomplish whatever is desired.

Siddha sankalpa means the Lord can accomplish whatever He thinks at the time He desired and in the way He wanted. His determination or sankalpa can never be changed. Today's [11th March 2009] is from Mukundagiri [near Madurantakam], the native village of the lecturer. Temple here is in great shambles. It is requested all to help in renovation and restoration of this temple, with Lord Sri Srinivasa. Ravana is told by Hanuman, that the Lord if He decided, Ravana would not be able to defend himself even with the help of Brahma, Shiva, or anyone or together. Sri Rama had promised Devas that He would finish off Ravana, and so even His coronation did not take place as planned by Dasaratha.

Shuchi showed His purity and sacredness. He is the Lord of all auspiciousness. He has no blemishes. He has to accomplish nothing and so does not expect anything from us, while we need everything from Him! Swami Koorattalwan wonders, why such accomplished Person as He, should steal butter and curd in Gokulam!

Embodiment of purity.

Swami Prasara Bhatta has combined Shishtakrut and Shuchi, into a single Divine name also. Shuchi means the Lord is Embodiment of purity. It also means sacred. He converts His devotees like Him. By worshiping and surrendering to Him, He ensures we enjoy everything in Vaikuntam. In Bairagi Sri Prasaanna Venkatesa Perumal temple special features can be seen. Just like in Tirumala, Brahmotsavam is celebrated in Purattasi month, here also. Similarly, in Karthigai month festivals are celebrated for Sri Thayar. But unlike in Tirumala, Sri Thayar is taken on procession on Garudi [female of Garuda] and Hanumanthi [female of Hanumantha] vahanams! Ahalya in spite of the greatest sin, a woman could ever earn, got purified by the Divine feet of Lord Sri Rama, and she is counted among the Five most chaste women [Ahalya, Draupati, Sri Sita, Tara and Mandodari].

Refines devotees to have good character and do good actions.

The Lord ensures His devotees raise to sublime level in all respects. We can worship Sri Puri Jagannathan in Bairagi Mutt temple in Chennai. It is to be noted that once a person becomes His devotee, He will exhibit superior qualities only. Kulasekara Alwar was very firm that His devotees would never resort to bad actions like stealing. When, once, others alleged that devotees had stolen a valuable necklace, Kulasekara Alwar not only believed but to prove the innocence of the devotees, he put his hand in a pot with poisonous snake. Since the snake did not bite him, he proved that the devotees were pure.

Has special skill.

The Bairagi, provided staying amenities for those on pilgrimage to Tirumala. Later, he thought, why not construct a Sri Venkatesa temple in Chennai itself so that pilgrims need not have the ordeal of going to Tirumala. To construct he needed money, which he earned by his alchemy [rasavada] skill, by which he converted copper like metals into gold. Though this is not good practice, he did it for very noble cause. Visishta means different. Swami Ramanuja differed from Shankara's advaita and gave the name Visishta-advaita, for his philosophy. Chetanam [atma having Gyana] and achetanam [opposite of chetanam] are bodies of Paramatma [God].

Pervades in and out, of all countless objects.

The Lord was praised as having countless forms and qualities in Asankhyeya. In this Divine name aprameyatma, the Lord possesses numerous properties, living beings, non-living matters, and pervades all of them inside and outside. Today's [4th March 2009] lecture is from Bhairagi Mutt Sri Venkatesa Perumal temple in Sowcarpet, Madras. It is 600 years old, built by Lalba, a bairagi from North India. Earlier we had seen Divine name Aprameya [SVS 52]. The Lord is recognized by His very beautiful eyes. Hiranyakasipu suffered because he questioned the all pervasiveness of the Lord.
On March 8th, Sunday, at 4 PM, a padayatra, with singing His names, is being arranged from Sri Parthasarathy temple, Triplicane to Sri Srinivasa [Swami Vedanta Desika]/Sri Kesava Perumal temples, Mylapore.

SVS 262 [Asankhyeyo - 248] (27.1)

248. OM ASANKHYEYAYA NAMA: ॐ असंख्येयाय नम:
Possesses countless living beings and non-living matter.

Every other Divine name could be justified to other gods; but the Divine name Narayana can never be attributed to others, and only Sri Vishnu can justify that Divine name. Alwar says that Sriman Narayana is the Ultimate God. The Lord possesses countless properties, auspicious qualities, etc. Even sand particles in a beach could be counted, but never the Lord's properties or His auspicious qualities.
